EV Battery Packs.

I suppose this could go in fossil fuel free, but since most of these are for sale I thought I'd put it here. Maybe this would be a good place to list EV battery packs for people interested in them.

I found two Chevy Spark packs listed today in the SF Bay area.

From what I read they are 19 kwh packs. So $1200 for a good pack is a steal. $2000 is pretty good too. Averaged together is about $84/kwh. I can't afford them right now or I'd buy them both to go along with my 16 kwh Volt pack and that would be all I'd need to be off grid.

Do you see many packs like these in your area? I took a peek at the SF craigslist and saw the ones you posted, a Tesla module, and some Volt modules. I might have to make a road trip if/when I need a battery (electric dirtbike is on my list of things to make when I can afford it).

Not a whole lot. I usually check every week or so. When I found my Volt pack I advertised in the WTB section.

But, I would be willing to bet there is a larger concentration of EV's in this area than in most anywhere else in the country Seeing as how Tesla is in the SF Bay area. I now see Teslas regularly. I was in San Jose yesterday and saw no less than 8 of them. Also saw and got to sit in one of the BMW EVs. There is an auction website where one can look for full vehicles. I've always just looked at the Leaf but I would guess you could search for any EV.

Those Spark packs will be gold because the new replacements are something like $22k. Should be able to get $4k out of a used pack.

Hm. So it's 336 cells @ 400v, 18.4kwh.

Assuming 112S3P would give 3.57v/cell nominal, which seems about right.

That's 15.33 Ah per cell or 46 Ah per 3P group. A useful cell size for non-automotive applications like ebikes or for converting hybrids into PHEVs without adding overmuch weight. The downside is they look like pouch cells. Anyone have links to a teardown showing how the cells are connected? It's probably welded tabs, which makes them... less useful.

Looks just like the 2kwh Volt packs. Probably 3.6 volts/cell nominal, 4.1 volts topped off. They originally used the A123 Lifepo4 cells and switched over to the LG cells for 2015.

Newer listing for Some Tesla batteries. $182/kwh. Higher than what I would pay but will probably last longer than Volt or Leaf batteries.

The tesla batteries are more volatile and without tesla level active thermal management definitely won't last as long as when in their cars.
