Judging by the replies, not many of you are licensed to drive school busses.
You run the heaters to reduce condensation /frost on the windows, not to keep the kids warm. If you can't see out, it's hard to drive.
Most school districts view busses as a huge waste of resources that could be better used elsewhere.
Iirc, a bus starts at a $100k usd most are 150+

Good point - they could added direct heated defrosters for the front windows. Ford did this in the 1970's and 80's, so it is totally doable. |

It would be easy to stick a diesel fired heater up under there.
I will probably put one in my leaf eventually.

In the 1990s a company in the UK offered VW Beetle windshields cut from that gold-tinted glass. Perfect for cars bleeding heat out of the rusted rocker panels.
Instead of diesel, an electric heat pump. Add battery or just manage what they have.

It would only be used when cold out and the windows are up.
Plus burning diesel fuel at atmospheric pressure to heat a bus doesn't produce nearly as much soot or NOx.
You go from burning 1 gallon of diesel every 6 miles to burning 1 gallon every 3 hours or more.
Let's assume the average speed of a school bus is 10mph and the heat load is 40,000 btus per hour because it's pretty cold. So now the bus gets 30mpg or so.
Its better than crashing into stuff because the windows are fogged up.

My leaf could use that.
The electric resistance heater butchers my range.
But since I have a hot water loop for heat I may entertain the possibility of adding a diesel fired coolant heater.

Heat pumps are way more efficient than resistance heating. A couple units on the room can handle heating and cooling needs.
School buses are elevated to cross rural railroad crossings without high centering

Heat pumps are more efficient but they still eat battery and the colder it gets the more they have to rely on resistance heat.
Around freezing they pretty much only use resistance heat to warm the compressor oil, but as the temperature goes down and heat demand goes up a resistance grid kicks on more and more to get usable heat.
For my leaf if I can install a diesel fired coolant heater I can stay nice and toasty and not eat up range.
