How are they going to enforce seat belt use, and what is their projected injury prevention based on this?

I don't think I ever sat correctly in a bus seat because they were planks. Instead I'd slouch in them with my knees wedged against the seat back.

Shoulder belts sound unnecessary because the main benefit of a seatbelt in a bus is to keep occupants in their seats in a rollover, not to prevent impacts into the padded seatbacks. I suppose it's necessary so the driver can enforce use. A lap belt can't be seen in the mirror.

The buses will be slower because the driver won't be able to proceed until the rider is seated and the belt is buckled so the light on the dashboard goes out?

Kids in the back will be buckling and unbuckling belts to prank the driver.

No specifics released on how to enforce it.

https://stnonline.com/news/iowa-one-...-school-buses/

"In Montana, Cohn said that school bus drivers are not responsible for students who don’t wear their seatbelts. He said that as long as drivers make a reasonable effort to ensure the students buckle up, such as walking the bus aisle and scanning for belt usage, they have met their responsibility. He said that law enforcement in Montana wants bus drivers to be focused on driving, and not focused on enforcing seatbelt policies while behind the wheel."

I cannot imagine up to seventy-seatbelt indicators and I am sure kids would sabotage them periodically.

They will still be sued the first time an unbelted kid is injured.

I dunno, I drove a 72 kid bus for elementary schools which was 3 kids to a seat instead of 2 for the bigger ones. You could legally push it to 90 plus depending on the back seat if you were hauling kindergarten kids.

Trust me, if they are belted in when you start, you'll hear them unclick. And no they don't have a seatbelt light except for the driver. You just pull over and park until you hear that click they make being buckled. When you park, the other kids snitch.

Misconception of people thinking the back is not observable by the driver. The first couple of rows directly behind me were invisible, everything else was clearly seen in the huge interior mirrors or camera in the newer busses.

I had to deal with the same issue transporting 10-12 year old students in a minivan. I would hear the clicking and I told them I couldn't catch them as they flew by. I resorted to laying down a 10 foot skid mark from 30 mph to make my point.

LOL, that's the kind of lesson I would enjoy teaching... it also doesn't allow for a very long bus driving career.

It depends on the kids. When I drove kindergartners I could not see any of them, but I heard each and every one of them!

I had two rules: No rap and everyone stayed seated properly while the vehicle was in motion. If they did not like the radio, they had their own options. If anyone stood up I pulled over until the other kids made the offender sit down, but the rebel without a clue usually yelled at me extensively first.

I do not remember slamming on my brakes in the bus due to anything happening inside in five and a half years, but do you know what led me to a short van-driving career afterwards, and presumably to driving Army trucks?

I forgot one of the basics of driving a bus: You always walk the bus before returning to base. I drove a lady and her three kids home. The neighborhood kids swarmed the van because apparently they were likable. I was focused on making sure that I did not back up over anyone.

One of the kids was asleep in the back seat. Neither the mom nor I counted kids exiting the vehicle and I did not double over and check each bench. I drove back, did my paperwork, went to the bathroom, and when I left the building emergency vehicles were all over the parking lot.

The boss had never hired anyone on the spot.

She fired me on the spot.
