My reading is it's a story about appearing dependent on humanity's compassion, but cynically exploiting it.

Oh, Ex Machina. I keep confusing that with Automata. Ex Machina was pretty good. Don't remember a thing about Automata, which means it wasn't good.
I liked I Am Mother a little more than IMDB, which is unusual.

Now it's clear your eference to The Simpsons. Humans fails, so someone start a robot to get something better, and in the end the robot (android) also fails with the human.
So, maybe the humans are the problem, as they where the creators.
It's like many women rasing kids, as women as like Frankenstein doctor. I call it Frankens Tina Syndrome. Women who raise kids, boys, with poor values and they became crap man which will s...up with many women when grow-up.
