So what would be a fair price for a 74-77 standard beetle in average driver condition?

US$6450

Here's a non-VW engine installation I like; a Pinto four. It makes a tidy install, note the muffler tucked up against the block, and the Optima battery laid on it's side.

How about a rolling tiny house. Notice the superior aerodynamics.

I think your tiny house needs a little upkeep!
But seriously, once again I've never seen one of those before. The other RV VW vans don't look like that one. It must be a pretty rare model.

I'm quite conservative when it comes to engine swaps on Beetles. Some years ago I used to think it was a waste to fit a liquid-cooled engine in a Beetle, but now I would either prefer a VW straight-4 or eventually a VR6 to keep it somewhat brand-loyal, or a Subaru flat-4 because of the fitment.

Air-cooled rules! Water-cooled drools!

Subbies are the go-to, because you can get overhead cams in a boxer. The air-cooled contingent is embarrassed by the 72° V-twin Hardly-Ableson. Here's a Motoguzzi:

Chopstix: Not my tiny house; and I suspect it was a one-off, being made out of plywood as it appears.

Mine looked more like:

I like air-cooled engines because they're simple, even though water-cooling makes it easier to manage the temperature and stabilize idling.

I don't really care about overhead cams, actually I could even be tempted to try a flathead

I still consider a motorcycle engine swap as a viable alternative for an old Volkswagen, or even for a newer car such as a Subaru. Even though Harley-Davidson engines are not so great at all, mounting one that way to fit into a car might actually lead to a more homogeneous cooling (as long as there is an electric fan to keep the air flow when the car is stopped or in slow traffic). Moto Guzzi is cool, but not officially available in my country.
