Old school rules:

if you're going to celebrate a long history of racing at Bonneville, and setting over 30 Land Speed records, 11 of which are still "in the book", this is a hell of a cool looking way to have the car represent it.

Link de-obfuscated for Xist's benefit.

Very tasteful. Just Moon disks and roof fences.

justacarguy.blogspot.com: There seems to be a misconception about a shortage of 23 window VW buses... there won't be any shortage. Have you seen how many they're building replicas of, at Yumos?

Quote:
Yumos VW, Semarang Indonesia has a crew of 30, and exports 90% of their finished vans. They make the vans from new parts, old 11 window vans, and a hell of a lot of work.

They take old Brazilian 10 windows, add a new aftermarket nose clip, etc etc is what I get from reading around the internet.

As best as Google can translate: Yudi makes VW type Combi Brazil into VW type Dakota.
Also the Berlin Buick made Hot Rod Magazine:

I was aware of Indonesians swapping the clipper front for the split one in Kombis, but I thought they were only doing so in the RHD ones exported from Brazil in the '80s instead of importing LHD ones by now.

No, that's a Kombi Lotação. It had 3 doors at each side and was LHD only. The RHD ones made for export had the regular split door, even though it was on the left side.

A three part article on a fiberglass kit car from 1958 (2 1/2 examples built).

Thor Archives - forgottenfiberglass.com

Quote:
We’ve been researching the first postwar VW specials that were designed and built in America using a body of original design dedicated to the VW platform. At this time we’ve found five early examples as follows:

Bunny Ronco designed and built at least one sports car using the VW drivetrain (not Beetle) which appeared in print in 1947
The Doray company of south Florida built a VW based sports/race car which raced in the southeast USA in the mid 1950s
The Berkeley based on VW chassis/drivetrain debuted in 1957 in California
The Alken debuted in in 1958 using a VW drivetrain/chassis
It was in this timeframe where Nik Gudmunds and Jerry Ball designed and built the “Thor” in 1957 and finished it in 1958 making it an early and unique example of an American designed VW-based sports car.

Here's one I really like:

https://drivemag.com/news/memminger-...ally-isn-t-one

This says it has a tube frame and there is a Youtube video that speculates it's based on an old Beetle. But those are New Beetle door handles and similar doors and running boards. The rear valance is New Beetle.

My best guess is a New Beetle body (possibly even a sedan, the windshield isn't a good match), gutted, with a tube subframe to carry the Type IV flat four and five-speed. Superbeetle-style fenders to fit new Beetle quarters. A Mexican Super front bumper.

I like the Porsche 918-style roll bars.

I don't know why nobody else is posting VWs. It's a bottomless well.

Today JACG has two posts, the other one is Just A Car Guy: Most expensive Samba.

Just A Car Guy: the world´s last surviving Kohlruss Samba, a 1951. Kohlruss was an Austrian coachbuilding company that put a pair of windows above the driver and passenger dashboard. They made about 300

Has anyone else sat behind the dash of a barndoor bus? I used to own one. Check out the horn ring in the black-and-white photo.

I have sat behind the dash of nearly every air-cooled Volkswagen (though not driving some) at least once, not to mention a few Volkswagen-powered vehicles from other manufacturers.

Pictures just to keep the thread going...

I'm not totally sure, but this Beetle may have served as a taxi here in Porto Alegre.
