Where does the "template" come from? Is there a post or thread that outlines how to use it?

I'm guessing that SOMEONE here knows where it is and is willing to tell.

Sorry Frank, but "do a search on it" doesn't answer a question.

I put in "template" and got NINE pages of results. Just maybe, one of those threads is the "mother ship" that tells you what the template is, how to use it, etc.

Specifically, go here :

Recent Posts -> Search Forums

In the Search by Keyword, input "Template"
Set the keyword search to "Search Titles Only"
Click on "Search Now".

That will give you 3 threads by aerohead on aerodynamic templates. Here is the first one :

I wouldn't be concerned about CHP,they're just looking to preserve safety.I can see why they popped you for the mirror delete.
In 35 years I've only been pulled over twice.The first officer was not acquainted with the 80 mpg speed limit and pulled me over.When he realized his mistake he made an embarrassed apology,we shook hands and I was on my way.
The second time,the officer thought he had not seen my front license plate.When he looked,he registered his error,we parted on friendly terms.

I have had officers pull a u-turn,accelerate up for a closer look,then fade away as they realized the vehicle was in compliance.
This happened especially after Bonneville when I still the had cardboard and duct tape add-ons on the car.
If you 'look' like you've been considerate of the other motorists safety you should be okay.

As to cutting to fit the contour of the backlight,that would be best, as you want to trap dead air inside there if you can.Snugger the fit,the better.

When I was first learning to use the template I made a mistake. Here is a correct overlay onto a 1999 Saturn SL2 :



The "0 degrees" is at the center of roof camber.

When I tried to apply the template to my 1999 Saturn SW2, I moved the template to line up to the end of my wagon, which was my mistake :



Question: Why is the stock Cd so different between models?

Answer(?): Even though the car designs are nearly identical, my mini-wagon violates the overlay template. When I keep the template over the center of camber (aka the same as the SL2), you can see the rear roofline break out of the template :

Hucho would say that the wagon is 'overshooting' the 'Template' and with the hyper-curvature it's losing pressure regain necessary for lower drag.I'm guessing that the tumblehome for the coupe,sedan,and wagon is the same,but the wagon may not have plan curvature of the greenhouse like the other two styles.
Today's Cadillac CTS Wagon has its roof pulled down to the 'Template' but suffers from its slanted chop,where Honda and Mazda etc. do the textbook Breer/Fachsenfeld/Kamm/Korff breadloaf chop.

At this 'length' Vesta II and Boxfish are already down to Cd 0.19 although their plan taper begins in the front doors like Impact/EV-1

The raised lid (partly built) is almost three inches above the current trunklid and has a flat spoiler that extends to almost the end of the bumper. Accomplishing a really snug fit to the window and sides is difficult if I am to retain use of the trunk. A functioning trunk and visibility out the back window are essential. I'm wondering about fitting those rubber insulators used to seal household doorjambs into these gaps for the "snugness" that produces dead air under the raised lid.

That does exist for a few cars. If you go to this e-bay store :

CAR LOVER SHOP and A LIL MORE STORE items - Get great deals on BROCHURES ARTICLES items on eBay Stores!

You will see little pamphlet thingies like this :

I went there and got an EV-1 pamphlet that I put in my EV1 album :




The problem is that your car really needs to be special or a classic. It's hit and miss.
