And nowadays many folks are scared the hell out about the EMPs released by a solar storm, as electronics are so much more intensively used. Once I inquired a teacher who also happens to work with avionics maintenance, and he said it's not really much a matter of concern.

Avionica are at a much higher level of hardening. There are two major troubles with EMP: flipping a critical bit in the RAM used for program storage thus crashing the program or disruption of controls sensor data. After some ungodly cost for a RNAV system, you want it to keep working in your hundred million dollar airplane.

Gm doesn't care much if your engine computer dies, it has replacements and your car isn't likely to have controlled travel into the side of a mountain with 300 souls onboard

That's why airplanes use at least 2 computers to run critical systems.
Military aircraft run at least 3 computers for flight controls. 2 computers in parallel then a 3rd computer that acts as a tie breaker incase the 2 parallel computers disagree.
