Fun turbo project

This past week I helped a buddy turbo his 79 vw Rabbit. Start to finish in 5 days and should get thrown on the dyno in a few weeks. The car was free and the kit cost came to about $100, thats a super duper homie hookup.

Full custom everything, fully tig welded stainless steel and aluminum

fun fun

OK, forgive me for not being able to tell, but is it a gas or diesel?

Completely unrelated: I had a couple of '79s myself

Its a gas 1.6 lol.

right now it only has the 1st half of the exhaust on but we went quite a bit overboard with the full 3" turbo back. That size exhaust should support up to about 700 hp

Sure sounds like a diesel though

haha

I thought exactly the same thing about the remote start.

And yes, to me it sounds like a giant Cummins diesel turbo spooling up and down. Wow.

Here are a few more pix

The welds looks a tad bit undercut in the pic but they really arent. The material is sch 40 stainless steel 304, its like 3-4mm thick. I dont call myself a welder btw, I'm only starting to get semi-good with my Tig.

And this pic is funny because thats a 100+k Full Raced out Subaru Sti in the background.

I feel cool in the plasma goggles

The outlet on the turbine was about 2 inches but everyone knows bigger is better post turbo. I knew I should have coned it out to 4 inches

Turbo actually looks pretty small but I guess you dont need too much for 1.6 liters heh. How much boost you gonna be running? I bet that lil vw feels a lot better now!

lol, I think its the smallest frame turbo Garrett makes. My buddy only wanted to make about 150-175hp and the Saab the turbo came off made 175hp factory so we should be right in the turbo's sweet spot.

I dont know how much boost yet, the dyno will tell me what the engine wants. We plans to add on a water/meth kit in the future to combat high IAT's.

i will be sure to post up any results/dyno plots/burnout vids

$100 is the cost of a few couplers and flanges.

Cost for me to replicate this kit for a non friend would be around $3000

The funny thing is that this little Rabbit is so sleeper. We are confident we can squeeze @ least a 13 second quarter time and still get around 30 mpg.
