Looking forward to it!

So first long trip in a long time (due to lock-down). Sion to Bourg en Bresse in France. About 300km each way, downhill and uphill.

3.6l/100km one way and 4.1l/100 back, so 3.8l/100km in average (61-62mpg US). Not bad considering GPS speed was 100km/h in Switzerland, 110 in France (105 and 115 tacho). The wind was globally not helping, most of time against me...

Nope! Not received it I think there was an issue with the order. I'll have to look about this this weekend.

But I always fold my passenger mirror, which according to my calculation has an impact of about 0.1l/100km.

So did a 600km trip through Switzerland, went to Lake Lucerne, Graubünden over some famous passes (Furkapass you can see in Goldfinger movie).

Here at the Rhonegletscher, the source of the Rhone river.
The car was full (5 adults + luggage for 4 days) and did a lot of uphill driving. In the end fuel efficiency was 4.5l/100km

Well, that's a lot of heights that have been conquered! It's the ideal car for a such a road trip. You've got a very long gear for highway speeds and the great torque of the TDI drags to conquer every mountain. Beside that, I'm always amazed at how spacious these cars are.

Subscribed. I appreciate when you include the mpg calculations in your posts for American readers. I am not good at mentally converting liters/kilometer into mpg yet.

Yep I'll try and do that. For the moment my all-time average is 4.5l/100km, which is about 59mpg. Could be worse, could be better. But I also have to say I tend to use train when I can on long trips which doesn't help to improve fuel consumption.

All in all, I do not use a lot of diesel.

I am now considering thanks to our GreenTDI friend to buy an Audi A2 1.2TDi (3L version). This car was a real ecomodder car from factory, and you can find some in Switzerland, though you have to take care because they are getting older and the robotic gearbox has not a very good reliability...

Great idea!

To be honest, if I had to replace my car today, I would look for an Audi A2. Nice design, spacious, all aluminum (even magnesium parts) and the right engine. Downside is the gearbox and it's only a 4-seater ... But installing a manual gearbox from a 1.4 TDI should be possible.

Considering that much of the newer Volkswagen water-cooled engine designs still hold similarities to the previous EA-827 and EA-111 series, even if some upgrade to the engine management and exhaust/aftertreatment would eventually be needed in order to become eligible for traffic in the low-emission zones which are getting quite widespread throughout Europe, it doesn't seem to be impossible. Well, I also like the Audi A2 and the concept behind it, but honestly the only reason that would lead me into getting one if I had a chance is the historical value.

Hurray! This weekend I beat by far my efficiency records :
- 3.2l/100 (73mpg us) downhill from Switzerland to Mulhouse
- 3.7l/100 (64mpg us) uphil from Strasbourg with carsharers (4 people + luggage)

This was in my opinion due to :
- moderate and very constant speed (100km/h mostly)
- average temperatures allowing no use of air con
- favourable winds
- long trips (minimum 200miles)
