It doesn't have to be this way. Compare those two side by side and it just gets worse for the Honda. They have almost the same basic shape. But all the weird creases, seams, color changes, and WTF moments (like the roof of the Clarity! They couldn't even leave the roof uncreased! WTF?) in the Honda just jump right out at you.

Even though the corporate identity and a few styling cues are similar, most noticeably the fake front grille and the lights, the i8 looks more "conventional". The door configuration of the i3 looks less practical than most models with a similar size, such as the Honda Fit and the Nissan Note.

That's stark!

Tesla proved you can use sexy to sell unconventional powertrains (though Model X is debateable). You don't have to make them weird.

Well there are exceptions to my comment about radically new cars being accompanied by radically hideous exterior design. The first Tesla was built on an existing car, so that doesn't count. Their second car, the S, is very attractive. Same with Model 3.

While the current trend is outrageously huge grills, I look forward to when our tastes prefer minimal, or no grill at all.

Ha. My wife looked at the Clarity and the Model 3 posted above and can't choose a favorite? The Tesla is 'Too futuristic' and she likes the LED hooks!
While we all agree the Tesla is in a class of its own...
What is wrong with her? Or us?

That is common with Japanese cars, first noted on the original doodad-covered Celica. Apparently, buyers there don't stand back for an overall impression. Still, this lacks the sheer lumpish presence of an Aztec.

I don't think it's that unattractive. I actually like the fender skirt thing, and if you showed me a silhouette of it, I think I'd like it that way too. There's some individual things like the fussy details everyone's throwing at cars these days and those stupid led headlights I could do without, but I'd have to say I like this more than the average car.

Ugliest award IMHO goes either to the Scion box thing (whatever model that was) or the Nissan Cube. Really any of those toastermobiles are so hideous that I instantly start thinking about committing arson whenever I see one.

I do agree with what was said earlier, though, regarding eco-cars seemingly having to look odd. The Prius has always been a fine example of this.
