From what I have read, the fastest Karmann Ghia had a 0 - 60 of 21 seconds, weighed 1,750 pounds, had 60 HP gross. (mostly found here: https://auto.howstuffworks.com/volks...mann-ghia4.htm)
The 1973 was rated 46 HP gross.
Frontal area 26 sq ft
Drag coefficient 0.4 (CC VW Karmann Ghia)
CdA = 10.4 square feet?

The 2004 Prius had a 0 - 60 of 10.4 seconds, weighed 2,903 pounds, had 110 horsepower gross, and Cd of 0.26 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Prius_(XW20))
CdA 6.24 sq ft https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automo...ag_coefficient

Here is the calculator I do not know how to use. https://www.carspecs.us/calculator/0-60
It says the KG should have a 12.8 0 - 60! It estimates 11.3 for the Prius, though.

So... what kind of acceleration can we expect from this creation?

It will have the Prius airbags? How would you guestimate its safety on a scale of stock Karmann Ghia to stock Prius?

Historically HP was measured differently than it is now,

I am uncertain that your HP numbers are apples to apples

I would estimate that the Ghia despite being less aero will be more spiritedly than the original Prius, though I have no doubt the Pria Ghia will weigh 500lbs more than the original

The 1971 Karmann Ghia was rated 60 HP gross, while the 2004 Prius was rated 110 HP net. I do not know how comparable the 1973 engine was, but it was rated 46 HP net. We are very well looking at 140% more power and I imagine the drivetrain is far more efficient.

The thing is, as I mentioned, when I put in the numbers I had for the Karmann Ghia, it said it would have a 12.8-second 0 - 60. In order to get 21 seconds I needed to drop the horsepower to 23.

If Hoopie's car weighs 2,250 pounds (500 more than stock), Carspec estimates it would have a 9.346 second 0 - 60.

That still does not sound fast, but isn't 110 HP good for 2,250 pounds?

Once I get the Firebrid done, Hoopie an I need to head down to a drag strip to see what they will do.

Sounds like a great idea to me. I can see it now, Summer of 2020, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday come down to the motor speedway to see the hybrid hot rods run the quarter mile. $5 for a seat but you’ll only need the edge. Pack a lunch, this may take awhile.

Will do! But I'm not sure it's really an eco modding project as the miata only get's 22mpg city. And it won't be in the hybrids section though because I'm using a '90 Miata for the donor chassis. I chose a Miata because it's the only thing narrow enough to fit between the Beetle body. But I will have to stretch the Miata wheelbase 6" to match the Bug.

It's worth its own thread. Time to start one and keep Hoopie's thread about his own project.

I can squeeze 50+ MPG of my '90 Miata in nice weather at moderate speeds. Mine looked just like your chassis-donor-car when I got it -- same blacked out wheels even. SO it should be an upgrade to the Beetle's MPG.

Hoopie where you at? I'm about to catch up to you! BTW I'm using a Type 3 now instead of the Super Beetle, and it bolts to the same exact VW chassis that your Karmann Ghia does. So it would be very interesting to see how your project compares to mine. The Miata I'm using is much narrower than your Prius, however.

(and sorry I haven't created my own thread on this forum, I already have one over on Grassroots Motorsports: https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/fo.../145906/page1/ )

Floorpan width is similar, but the Type III has a different front torsion bar axle beam.

Supposedly this human is selling a 2009 Prius with 112,500 miles for the completely reasonable price of $1,200: https://tucson.craigslist.org/cto/6800509512.html

Is it me or do the pictures look like they were taken off a computer screen?
