One of the annoyances my wife always goes nuts over is when driving to her mom's house (almost every weekend). I am consistent with my need to drive slow for economy and safety reasons (I invented this safety reason as added ammunition when we are driving the kids around). When she is running late she need to put on her makeup in the car which means I get to drive . So I pick the right lane (which is supposed to be the slow lane here in the US) and lock in to my ~60mph safe and economic mode. I always hear "the speed limit is 65 you know" with the implication of "drive 70-75 and you can probably get away with it, and mom won't be mad at us". The difference in time is 24 min at 70mph -vs- 30 min at 60. 6 min should not matter so much. Especially if you consider the safety of kids and the added benefit of no risk of a speeding ticket. What man here would want to speed to his mother-in-laws anyway?

It reminds me of the time I was headed to my cousin's graduation party, where I would see a lot of family who I'm not particularly fond of. I set the cruise for 35 in a 55 on a curvy two-lane road with few passing zones. I must have caused traffic to back up for a mile. *shrug*
I suppose this is rather irritating of me, but I didn't break any laws, I saved fuel, and I saved myself from spending too much time with irritating people. I consider this a win.
It is kind of interesting that most people have adopted the posted speed limit to mean the minimum speed for not being irritating. But with safety, economy, lower stress being the logic to justify this behavior what justifiable reason can they give for the need for speed?
(I do try to stay out of peoples way and not clog too much but you can't avoid all the jerks- especially when they think I'm the jerk. They wouldn't notice if they slowed down).
My friends all used to piss and moan about everyone else "being in the way", saying that "these people need to learn how to drive!"... I would calmly ask: "Who's going to teach them, you?"
I got the stickers after the whole getting stopped and breathalyzed for driving below the limit - its not illegal, but why would anyone do that, right?
I imagined it would keep people from piling up behind me so much (on the 4 lane highways around here) but it actually doesn't. I guess some people just need an excuse to drive slower (ie following someone) but don't really mind.

I'd like to hear the details about the breathalyser story. Do you have the story posted here? Those stickers are absolutely perfect. Straight to the point and people (that can read) shouldn't question your motives. You will probably still be considered an idiot though <shrug>. It is kind of hard doing our part to conserve while seemingly the whole nation doesn't care. This site is a good collection of the caring. I hope it spreads.
