I’ll give that. The Outlander Sport that I bought doesn’t have dynamic performance anywhere near my Saturn, and the mileage isn’t even in the same field unless you’re comparing city only. As car guys, we *can* modify them to make up their shortcomings, can’t we?

These distinctions are getting ridiculous. Apparently there's a difference between a hatchback, and a liftback, and both of those are different than a station wagon how?

The station wagon has a lower rear gate. Hatchback/liftback? Prolly the angle of the glass. Liftback includes my Dasher and the Chevy Nova. Others?

My Outlander Sport, being based on the Lancer platform, has stuff like coilovers available to drop it quite a bit. I’ve seen pics of them tucking a smaller than stock tire. At that point it appears like a Lancer wagon if I’m honest

"Outlander Sport low rider" doesn't return a result as a search term. But you can do a lot with tire cross sections. My Superbeetle has stock 165-15 on the front and 165/50-15 on the front.

165/50-R15 tires are 0.93 inches (23.5 mm) smaller in diameter than 145/65-R15 tires and the speedometer difference is 4.1%

Cal Look uses 145 in front (similar to lowriders) and 165s in back. The 165/50 has much more contact patch. Adds about 2 1/2" drop. (The trick to a hot VW is stock engine and undersized front tires. It's good for +10-12% more top end. )

Hatchback vs wagon is the length behind the rear wheels. A wagon is sedan length with a near vertical hatch. It has more cargo volume than the sedan. A hatchback is shorter than a wagon with a near vertical hatch. It gives the cargo volume of the sedan in a shorter vehicle.

A lift back is basically a sedan profile with a hatch

A VW Jetta is a sedan
A VW Golf is a hatchback
A VW Golf Sportwagon is a wagon
A Audi A5 Sportback is a lift back

All are built on the same platform

A shooting brake seems to be just a 2 door wagon. Or just another way for a manufacturer to call a wagon anything but a wagon because wagons are uncool.

The wagon in almost dead in the USA. Certainly the affordable ones. My Jetta wagon is the last affordable wagon I can think of and VW killed it and the Golf last year.

A shooting brake seems to be just a 2 door wagon.

Wikipedia calls the Chevy Nomad [2004 concept] a shooting brake.

Wagons don't have to have a tailgate. They can and American wagons had them way back when but they disappeared in the 70's or 80's. My parents 9 passenger Oldsmobile wagon from the 70's had a gate. My 1990 Chevy Cavalier wagon did not nor did either of my VW Jetta Wagons.


Even back in the 70's European wagons didn't have tailgates. Volvo is known for their wagons and I can't think of one with a tailgate.
