Ice/Cooling Vests: Hypermilers Dream Come True

I am going to try the moist cloth around the neck tomorrow see if it makes a bit of difference.

Something I like to do is wet a towel, and throw it in the freezer. it's a crisp towel that cools you fast, and slowly thaws into a cold towel. Then you just throw it in the fridge or freezer at work (in a place where they can't see it ) or just in a cold place, and then you have a cold towel while leaving.

I just tried this yesterday and it worked pretty good :



The vest is a fishing vest that I got on sale for $10. It seems to be a "short" vest, which makes it easier to wear in the car. The ice packs are $0.80 a piece. I may get 4 more ice packs to have a rotation system.

Yesterday was hot, but the real test will be in high summer,

EDIT: I'm only worried about the commute to work, because I usually drive back at night.

You might get on the TSA watch list with that.. What about the back are there any pockets back there? Does it keep you cool enough so that your back's not sweating?

I'll have to try that if it gets much hotter, I was unable to try the chilled neckband because it was overcast the next day so I had a nice commute.

Couldn't you use those beaded seat covers to keep your back dry?

this is great! Long ago one of the pop-sci magazines had a story about such a thing.When I contacted the company who "made it",they said it bombed in the marketplace and was out of production.I wanted it for the trike project and looks like I can get my hopes back up.I have a chilled water drinking fountain with very small hermetic electric compressor which I believe could chill my blood supply if nothing else.With an on-board inverter I canTexas summers are rough,and this might be a life saver and with minimum load on the vehicle (fuel).Thanks for the post!

With some of the crazy looking crap already in my car, I think the TSA would have plenty to work with.

On the back of the vest there is a single big pocket, maybe 10"x10" in size. To make that work, I think I would need a big "soft" cold pack, like those used for injuries. To use the "little jug" cold packs, I would need some kind of surrounding foam to keep them away from my spinal cord. But, in an accident, I would probably be injured by them, so I am wary of "hard" cold packs on my back.

I need to have some really hot days to see if it performs well enough to make the back unimportant (maybe a fat chance, but I need to find out). Otherwise I may try the seat bead option.

They make a gel type of ice pack that comes in a rectangular bag kind of application. We have a few in our freezer.
