All the cool kids have 'shifter karts'.

After watching videos of karts fitted with Chevy Stovebolt-Six engines, maybe a Prius-engined kart would be interesting to say the least...

A kart would not be practical for everyday use, nor legal for that matter.

This however...

This is a replica, incidentally. But I like that single wheel trailer.

Prius guts in a car you can carry around by hand! Okay, the portability may be compromised slightly

Sure, but who said it was meant to be street-legal anyways?

Only if you could fit the Prius' driveline into the trailer to use it either as a pusher or turned it into a range extender for an all-electric replica of the Peel P50. It would only depend on how deep are your pockets...

This is the MGR out of the back of a Lexus SUV. It embodies Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive

Compared in size to only the engine case of a VW beetle, it is a complete drive package—motor, gearset and differential. It weighs 90 pounds. Without the inverter and battery pack.

Stop! You're making those demons in my brain want to apply an HSD setup to a single-cylinder 500cc 2-stroke...

How about the other way around. What if you could fill a Prius body with any other car's guts?
I would say pre '05 1.9 TDI with a manual. Or the 1.0 Ford Eco boost with a manual.

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr -- The Lexus/Highlander 3rd member is three orange cable in and axle drive flanges out, so it's perfect for pure electric conversions, but a hybrid would have to be through-the-road.

Hersbird -- Bingo. The Prius' advantage is that aerodynamic body.

The title of this pic is Screen shot 2013 03 27 at 12.29.57 PM. So March 2013.

The donor vehicle has a drag coefficient of 0.42 or so, the Prius is 0.25 or 0.26. The donor vehicle, in it's original small displacement, low compression configuration was good for up to 40MPG.

The front suspension components are Rabbit/Golf. It has a longitudinal transaxle with the older non-hypoid differential. The straight cut gears cost less power. It has a Porsche cooling fan running off the crankshaft at 1:1 and eleven blades in the fan instead of five to make up the difference. Into a Type III air ducting with the generator on it's own belt. Prius doesn't carry a lot of batteries but it would still lose weight.

It might run in the 36hp Challenge in the streamliner class.

Prius guts into a Caterham chassis.

The Caterham 280, with a 1.6l Ford engine, weighs in at under 1300 lbs - 550kg. As lightly loaded as that, even the stingy Prius drivetrain could provide some thrills.

Hah, that would be like transferring a Tesla battery pack and drive train to a Lotus Elise!
Ow wait...
