That looks light damage by deer accidents. most of them where i live usually bend chassis and go through windscreen. car will live to fight another day. deer carcass unoffical highway rules. he who finds dead animals becomes owner.

When you rebuild, you might want to consider adding a low nose like I have on the front of the Aerocivic. Since aeromodding the car, I've hit two deer at 45mph with the deer running from left to right in front of the car. In both cases the low nose kicked the legs out from under it, so the deer got rotated upside down and then passed either over the top of the car or off the right side of the hood. In both cases my only damage was a cracked headlight lens and a slight dent to the top of the hood. The low sloped nose (about 12" above the ground) combined with the upward slope of the hood acts as a wedge to redirect the collision energies upward to lift the deer up and over the car, and causing minimal damage to the car. By contrast, the flat front bumper of most cars absorbs the collision energies and results in much more body damage. And as an added bonus you can install an adjustable grill block in the nose and lower the stagnation point on the front of the car. Before I aeromodded the car, I had an almost identical collision with a deer, deer running from left to right, about 40mph, resulting in much more damage; replaced left front fender, left headlight, and straightened out a bigger dent in the hood.

Doesn't look bad, about what mine was when the deer landed on it. (Deer was hit by SUV coming the other way, tossed into the air, and came down more or less vertically on my right fender.) Check radiator & A/C if you have it: had to replace radiator, the headlight unit, and fender, but it's been running fine for ~5 years since.

Metro-
I am not sure, what I remember of the accident it ran almost along the car and cutting in, hitting the front left lamp and rolling over the hood. I am thinking it was struggling and a limb or the head bashed into it. And I wish it just smelled like meat! I am going to take her out tomorrow for a bit, right now trying to not ride the Mustang clutch- which has to be done in the Insight.

brucey-
Agreed. I feel very fortunate for the situation. My concern on being "totaled" isn't that the car is unfixable, rather it may not be worth fixing to my insurance company.

chefdave-
I believe the cars low and aerodynamic form really influenced the accident to be less destructive, compared to the Mustang, or Escape.

basjoos-
I like that idea, and as mentioned in this post, I think it would have been much different had I been in a different vehicle. Did you show your build in your thread? And does it help aerodynamically at all? I don't want to increase the frontal area at all, since I will be completing a total underbody on it.

jamesqf-
That's a good call out. When I test drive it, I will have to run everything, and make sure cooling and everything is working properly. I haven't even popped the hood yet.

The nose helps aerodynamically by lowering the stagnation point and allowing the installation of an adjustable grill block. It has no effect on the frontal area and improves safety by adding a foot of additional crush space to the front of the car. The bottom of the nose is the forward part of the smooth under paneling under the car. The absence of a flat front bumper also means there are no dead bugs to clean off the front of the car. There are photos of the nose at aerocivic.com and on my photobucket account at: 80MPG Honda Civic Photos by MikeMariettaSC | Photobucket

If the car is insured, don't take the first offer they give you. Take the car to 3 different shops and get quotes, and don't take less than the median.

I wouldn't even turn this in on insurance, personally. It's not worth it since you'll end up paying through the nose on premiums in the future. Scrounging a headlight, a bumper, a door glass, and a fender at a junkyard shouldn't be impossible.

yeah exactly brucey, you cannot then get insurance in the future because its too expensive if you claim on it.

Car insurance is only good for one claim, then thats it.

It may not even be good enough for that, when you total up the amount of money that you spend in monthly payments and upfront excess fees, it usually ends up costing the same amount as the car does, in my case at least.

Insuring against losses you can cover yourself is just giving money away.

my insurance company puts deer strikes, hail damage, etc. down as "acts of god" might be NY law but they can't penalize you for them through price hikes or fees if i recall correctly
