Why the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona’s Spoiler is So Tall
https://www.heacockclassic.com/artic...er-is-so-tall/

Quote:
The 1969 Dodge Daytona, and corporate sibling the 1970 Plymouth Superbird, were special edition vehicles manufactured by Mopar to compete mostly in NASCAR. Designed in a wind tunnel and boasting a 0.28 drag coefficient, the Daytona’s styling was bold, to say the least

The cd was .28 on the winged warriors. For reference, a Honda Insight was .25.
Aerodynamics and Efficiency Through the Air – Honda Insight, Toyota Prius, and Chevy Volt :: Auto Upkeep Blog

Quote:
The lower the drag coefficient the better. The lower the number the more aerodynamic the vehicle is cutting through the air which helps in increasing fuel economy.

GM engineers concede that Toyota achieved 0.25 for the Prius on their wind tunnel, but as they point out “its really all relative to what tunnel it was tested on”. See GM’s statement.

Just for fun, check out this Wikipedia article listing the coefficient of drag for many vehicles. A 2003 Hummer H2 had a rating of 0.57, whereas a 1996 GM EV1 0.195.

I wonder if anyone ever tested the Daytona/Superbird's drag without the wing. It should be less.

Of course I'd want to chop it and turn it upside down under the back bumper.

I don't think it was for drag reduction, it was for added downforce and stability.

The first Daytona I saw was actually at a Plymouth dealership, brand new. I wanted a 340 Duster.

I don't think the old Dodge Daytona and Plymouth Superbird come anywhere close to fitting the aero-template.

Have these Cd numbers ever been independently tested and verified?

Yea, the wing was so tall so that the trunk would open, and just had to be a drag source too.

EDIT-1:

I found this, in an attempt to answer my own questions.

FINALLY!! Production 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona in a wind tunnel

Quote:
This is the car from the WPC Museum, so the scoops do not have openings, since the car has 70 Charger fenders on it.
Nevertheless, here's a photo to accompany the words below:

(this was probably the first test ever for a production Daytona [according to Romberg, they were focused on the race vehicle]; the 0.37 CD was also exceptional for its period, and also the vehicle came in at -0.14 rear lift thanks to the 23 inch rear wing).

So - THIS production Daytona measured at .37

The .29 figure we have all learned to quote is for the much lower RACE version with side glass.
The .29 appeared on the Daytona drag study graph prepared by Gary Romberg and found in the "F" body aero study booklet..............

I got this email with the photo from the Chrysler tunnel. I have no further info on details
other than the posted quote and that it happened in June, 2012! What's a few years waiting for info like this?

FINALLY!! Production 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona in a wind tunnel
Quote:
Don't see a plain old CD number. But the old paperwork references CdA (Drag coefficient x frontal area) for comparitive purposes from a 1971 performance estimation memo:

Wing Cars 7.0
1971 race cars 9.5 (Street Road Runner 10.2, Dodge 11.2 - both with windows up)
1970 standard body cars 10.3

The G-series tunnel tests say the standard 1971 cars had roughly 300 hundred pounds more rear lift compared to a Daytona.
Can someone reverse the math and deliver a Cd number to us?

That thing needs an air dam real bad. The nose is way too high.
The rear window is just a bit too steep, which imho is the worst you can do. Make it real steep and it would cause less drag.
It is a long car - length has no effect on Cd, it just adds more surface to have drag on -and I bet the underside is one big aerodynamic mess.
The wing just enlarges the wake.

Cd 0.4? They must have been doing something right too then!

CFECO -- Agreed it's for downforce, which causes drag. I think there're better ways of doing it.

kach22i -- that's some good sleuthing. What happens with the headlights up? I think the thing about following The Template is that they filled in the sail panels from the Charger. Google Images led me to a 2010 Ecomodder thread!

I think the taillights, tail-fin and chrome are a little overdone for my taste, but the wheel has a full cycle fender and it looks like the running boards might act as fences to keep the turbulence off the body sides. It even has a trip strip to reattach flow over the tail.

The Datona was a way to make the street car faster on the track, almost half a century ago! It was not for ultimate low drag or Cd. They did have chin spoilers, lowered, and raked. The headlights were not an issue baca use they didn't race at night. The ventricle struts holding the wing were also for stability at high speed.
