Father of the Teardroppers: Lyman Voelpel’s “Arrow Plane”
http://theoldmotor.com/?p=171888

Quote:
Based on the aerodynamic advances incorporated into airplane design in the 1920s and early-1930s wealthy Chicago resident Lyman Voelpel commissioned the Hill Auto Body Metal Company of Cincinnati to construct his “Arrow Plane” in 1932.

The unique coachwork was built on a 1932 Ford Model “B” chassis with the four-cylinder powerplant turned around and mounted in the rear.

However, streamlining doesn’t always win in the marketplace. When streamlining conflicts with styling, styling often wins. Today, who would buy a car shaped like this?

Sort of in the realm of aerodynamics...

Tatra made a V8 T603 race car, and removed the parasitic load of the cooling fans from the air-cooled engine.

How did they keep it cool, you might ask?

Those big honking exhaust pipes are actually exhaust extractors, basically venturis that act something like the "air multiplier" on those Dyson bladeless desk fans to suck air though the engine. Voila, an extra chunk of HP not used by the cooling system!

https://www.carthrottle.com/post/wybmg98/

I always wondered if someone could run something similar on a air-cooled VW engine.
