That's the Lister Jaguar Costin bodied version. Frank loved those rounded sides, wheels be damned, creating a distinctive British style. Here's what he replaced: https://www.ecosia.org/images?q=Lister+Jaguar+Knobbly but I notice that in the Revival races at Goodwood, which is a fast track, the Knobbly is not much slower.

Not much slower is still slower.

I like this one. Make a four-passenger version with protruding fender pontoons and you're back to the Volkhart-Saggitta with SVX side windows.

I really wish there were more pictures of this, front and rear. I'm a fan of the torpedo-bodied GM sedans

Now we know where Porsche got the idea for the shovel nose. Bill Cushenberry or the Alexander Brothers would have retained the 1952 Pontiac grill bars.

1). No car is “beautiful” which requires contortions to enter or exit.

2). No car is “beautiful” that requires me to remove my Stetson.

3). No car is “beautiful” which can’t carry four 6’4” 220# men with hunting gear & luggage. Air-conditioning, power steering & brakes. Powered seats.

4). No car is “beautiful “ that can’t run the quarter-mile in 14-seconds. Or tow a 7,500-lb trailer.

Therefore, a unit-body 1967 Imperial Crown hardtop is the most beautiful car ever built.

Whatever else, it’s first a tool. There’s no beauty that function doesn’t precede it.

Are you quite sure?

I scoff at anything more than a ten-second quarter, unless it's pulling a 7,500lb trailer.

They must've recruited horse racing jockeys to pilot the thing. What situation would warrant the pushbars? Bonneville?

I should try to keep up with the Pelican Parts thread. This one tells a[n aerodynamically optimized] story:

I was driving behind one of these today, looks fairly aerodynamic except for the rounded rear corners that could induce some buffeting.

There is a rearward taper (besides the roof) that this photo does not really show off that is pretty exciting in my opinion.

Translated - 1953 LeMans, two Porsche 550 Prototypes ran and won.

Some more backstory.

The first three hand built prototypes came in a coupé with a removable hardtop. The first (550-03) raced as a roadster at the Nurburgring Eifel Race in May 1953 winning its first race. Over the next couple of years, the Werks Porsche team evolved and raced the 550 with outstanding success and was recognized wherever it appeared. The Werks cars were provided with differently painted tail fins to aid recognition from the pits. Hans Herrmann’s particularly famous ‘red-tail’ car No 41 went from victory to victory. Porsche was the first car manufacturer to get race sponsorship which was through Fletcher Aviation, who Porsche was working with to design a light aircraft engine and then later adding Telefunken and Castrol.
And one of the articles mentioned this race below, unclear if they ran with tops on or off.

https://www.racingsportscars.com/rac...953-05-31.html

I assume at some point cars are pushed in and out of the pits. Guessing those fins help prevent denting the aluminum?

A number of companies have made replicas over the years, often with fiberglass bodies and Volkswagen engines, but the owners of Spyder Creations say their car is as close to the original as possible. The bodies are hand-hammered out of aluminum, just like the originals, and period-correct Porsche engines and parts are installed.

I read the fine article:
Quote:
Price as tested: $320,000.
..and they don't burn clear premium in it? Mercedes were silver too because it's Germany's official racing color.

Neither of the articles connects the humpback body with lift-off top. Having watched from afar, (Parts Obsolete*) and their outlaw 356s, I've never seen that before.

You can get a 23-window bus body in steel for $17K. Imagine the same in aluminum with the Tesla small-block rear-wheel drive.

I notice the Range Rover isn't on that list, nor the Nissan Murano.
_______________

At the time it was introduced the Thunder Ranch RSK was considered at least equivalent to the original. The frame was by Chuck Beck and it was powdercoated and bonded to the fiberglass tub. I think it had good torsional rigidity.

https://www.thunderranch.com/rsk.html

* When they were in Amity, at their swap meet, I stood next to one of those $150,000 4-cam engines (and didn't take a picture ) and the unrestored but showroom fresh right-hand-drive 1954 barn door bus. It is worth about the same.

Yea I caught that too.

Some people tell me white is the color of German racing, others say silver.

It can be both?

The vagaries of time have swallowed up many stories from our collective pasts and the meandering tale of Germany’s racing color is just such a lost legend. Completely unique amongst the ranks of nations, Germany is the only country to have two international racing colors it’s racers can choose from. It is the story to which we now turn in our exploration of national racing colors.

When the racing colors for the every country were first decided with the advent of the Gordon Bennett Cup, Germany was among the first four to be assigned. White was their chosen hue and so it remained for 32 years of racing and victories. Then something happened that is disputed and today verges on legend.
