I was poking around in Ecomodder's innards, when I found this. It seems like it's worth a repost, since 2008: ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/gravity-racer-gallery-extreme-aerodynamics-1208.html#post69119

That third page is excellent (note the progression across the top), but I flip out over the Aerocarene

If not aerodynamic by today's standards, then at least it's beautiful.

gravity-racer-gallery 2008

Looking at the University of Michigan's 'NOVUM', you can see elements of:
* the 1906 Stanley Steamer LSR 'canoe', 1928 Rumpler closed-car limousine, and 1933 Mauboussin closed-car, enclosed cabin, enclosed-wheels, with almost no ground clearance ( Jaray 1922 ), embodied in the lower body.
* NOVUM's bubble canopy borrows from Paul Jaray's 'kombination' form roof of 1922.
* And NOVUM's photovoltaic array, a boat-tailed version of Jaray's 1922 ' kombination' form double- wing root, airfoil body.
* All the connection intersections blended together with Sighard Hoerner's fillets of 1951.
New dog, old tricks.
No new theory.

kach22i -- "Corvair Testudo" FWIW

I wish the illustrations were larger than 800x1198, the text is hard to decipher. What might be the Mathis 300(?) is a lot like the contemporary Corbin Sparrow.

Based on the shape labeled 'Csp: 0,2' I did this for one of the gravity racer threads:

It also validates my old VW bus design:

* Without a side view in true-length, it's hard to tell if there'd be separation issues over the top and down the rear pontoon fenders. They look kinda 'fast.'
* Considering the plan-view, if Elliott Gray Reid, of Stanford University was still with us, he might tell you that there's a 16% drag penalty from lack of boat-tailing those rear fenders, something he specifically tested for.
* The Mathis 'long-tail'( Cd 0.18 ) took advantage of this technology.

Consider it a 'first draft'.

edit:
From the Pelican Parts thread, what's going on here?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-t...l#post11344187

Maybe a space saver spare inside a donut shaped gas tank? What's the pipe that snakes it's way toward the dashboard?

It should be the filler hose. The little one would be a vent, or to a charcoal cannister in the engine bay.
For the USA market they put it on the other side. Never understood that. 'Aerobics' for Porsche owners?

So it is then. An inversion of the old Beetle spare tire/tank.
