Stuffy is one of those terms. It simply comes down to 'uncomfortable'.

As for your original question, stuffy to me is as others said, uncomfortable. When it's 90 outside with high humidity and you just feel like sticky, that's 'muggy', stuffy is like a stale air that you can feel. Hot and dry, which I love, will sometimes get 'stuffy'. It's a nice temperature, just feels stale. Therefore, stuffy.

For me, I get rid of stuffy by opening a window, regardless of how hot it is outside, and putting a fan in the window. Whenever your wife feels stuffy, open a window and put an extremely high airflow fan in front of it. My mom told me this is how she cures the problem.

My grandparents lived in Hesperia and I remember burning up in their house. I think it's just a high desert thing that you adapt to. When temps are regularly 90-100 degrees, it becomes normal.

Mom has been in Oregon for 35 years, so she should be used to the cold by now. 77 is not acceptable. Old women and their broken thermostats...

Stuffy is entirely mental in my wife's case. We can walk into the house after nobody has been in it for a week, and she will say it's stuffy. It's roughly the same temperature, humidity, and dust count as it always is.

If I could somehow replace the air in the room with outdoor air of the same temperature without her knowing, I'm sure she would still say it's stuffy inside.

She can go outside if that air is what she wants to breath. The inside air stays inside unless we're trying to cool the place down after the summer heat.

Stuffy may not be heat related at all, but instead an air quality issue. Consider a heat recovery ventilator to bring in "fresh" air and expell excess CO2.

Sounds like someone needs to go outside for some exercise. Otherwise maybe there's too much CO2, as above stated, and it's hard to pin down what is actually happening. "I don't know what feels wrong, so I'll call it stuffy."

I'd go for a walk, but before leaving turn the ventilation on without the heat or AC. Just move some air into the house. When you get back it might be better, and maybe just moving the air itself will help.

Air becomes "stuffy" when the CO2 levels builds up in the room, usually resulting from your respiration, but can also result from burning an unvented heat or light source (vent-less gas heater, candles, etc.). To relieve it you open a window or turn on a ventilation fan to bring in air from outside that has a lower CO2 and a higher O2 level.
