Apologies - I had to go to bed (after emptying the loft of old car books, did I mention I would avoid Google...)
4 valve engine was a Peugeot GP car. There is a link because Bugatti designed a Peugeot car but not the 4 valve one as far as my book said.
On the plus side I now have a pile of old car books to re-read... 
I may indulge Google for the fuel filler one though, not being familiar with US cars.
Bendix, who are they ?

@Larry - is this car with the unusual filler position a current car, pre or post war ? (as in ww2).

Take a look at this.......... 1958 DeSoto Electrojector - First electronic fuel injection?
This system was made by Bendix, and if you look carefully, every EFI system we see now is based on it. I believe the rights were sold to Bosch who took it on to its logical conclusion.

The funny thing about Lucas; if the accountants stayed out of the way, they probably would have been remembered for the most reliable electrics.
The folks in the front office always found a way to cheap out and get away with it. Was reading about the history of Jaguar in the US, and it was said that with some things all it took was an extra .04-.06p per unit to make the switches perfect, but they wouldn't do it.

Funny thing is all the cars in my younger days (up until late 20s) were BL or BL Descendant machines with loads of Lucas badged parts all over - Metros, original Minis mainly. I can't think of a single time I had an electrical failure apart from water in the distributor in a mini which was cured at the factory with a bit of hardboard, and at home with a rubber glove with the fingers removed.
As soon as I got into old MGs and started getting "improved from the original Lucas design" parts I was stranded often - coils, distributors, non-working lights at night - all sorts. It was a little like the MGOC wanted you to have the full "period" experience
No smoke though, thankfully.
