Karma joins the hot line up

A Texas Fisker Karma joins the recent list of models of being a fire starter. Not plugged in but just recently garaged, the owner reported smelling burning rubber before the conflagration. The brand-new 60-day old Karma was a post-recall model. Fire chief investigator remarked, "This looks just like golf cart fires we have down here." Official claims Fisker Karma to blame in Texas house fire - Autoweek

Fisker quickly sent an 'investigation' clean-up crew, demanded a 24-hr lock down of the residence, cordoned-off with opaque tarps to block public view and even implied fraud & malicious intent?!! Just hope this thing does not blow up a SECOND time! Updated: Fisker Karma to Blame for Texas House Fire?

Just out of curiosity I googled "car fires per year" and apparently car fires are not that uncommon.

From one of the first hits:

Quote:
In 2003-2007, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 287000 vehicle fires per year.

Obviously it caught fire because the owner was a bad person.

Some how I don't think the cause of these fires was parking the car though.

Most cars are internal combustion engine powered. When you turn them off the combustion process stops thus eliminating the most viable ignition source. The only two parked car fires I have seen were the result arson and some idiot overtaxing his electrical system with a stereo.

It's pretty easy to find examples of ICE vehicles that catch fire while parked.

Like this recall from BMW from just over a month ago:

Feds: Park recalled BMWs outside till fire risk fixed

Quote:
BMW and U.S. safety regulators said today that owners of 5 and 6 Series cars recalled this week should park them outside until a battery cable fire risk in the trunk is checked and fixed.

As we reported on Monday, BMW announced in Germany it would recall 1.3 million of the cars worldwide -- 368,000 in the U.S. -- for the problem.
