Kia Niro shows the importance of wheels on FE

MPG in Highway/City/Combined
Code:
Package FE LX EX Touring
16” wheels	52/49/50	51/46/49	51/46/49	-
18” wheels	- - 46/40/43	46/40/43
Curb weight	3106 3199 3199 3287
Roof rails	No Yes Yes Yes
Look at that FE drop from the 16->18" wheels!

The difference between the FE and LX seems to be about 100 lbs in weight, and roof rails.

Wow, tables.

I'd be curious about the tire selection. Would a tall, narrow tire fit?

Neat! But ofcourse, it is probable that there are other differences too, such as fuel map and an aero package beyond just removing roof rails.

Still, within the identical model, the fuel efficiency drops 13% for the big, non-aero wheels.

Side note, the FE/LX/EX wheels are, indeed, better aero than the Touring/18" EX wheels:

Do you have the claimed top speeds for those models?

The more aerodynamic versions should have a higher top speed.

In Europe Dacia sells a hatchback car called the Sandero.

They also have a version called the Sandero Stepway which has bigger wheels and appears to be jacked up in the air slightly to give it a slight SUV look.

Interestingly, Dacia provides CDA data for these 2 versions, with the conventional hatchback coming in at 0.76 and the Stepway at 0.91.

Thats works out to be 19.7% extra aero drag for the Stepway.

Dacia charges an extra 1500 euro for the Stepway.

so... 1 1/4" taller tire. You might need to add a boat tail to compensate.

It may be easier to reach the top speed and sustain it, but if it retains the same gearing of the less aerodynamic versions it may not have a so noticeably higher top speed.

As it's a hybrid, the top speed is probably electronically limited.

Are there any other cars with such MPG discrepancies based on wheels alone? And do you know if this is just the company's estimate or if it was actually verified by the EPA? As far as I knew wheels only affected 1 mpg, at most 2, and that was regular wheels converted to solid caps (i.e. pizza pans).
