Exactly because of the larger amount of motor vehicles, it's better to consider other alternatives to gasoline and regular Diesel fuel that could be readily integrated to the supply chain. Fuel-efficiency standards are also not bad at all, but having them tied to unrealistic emission regulations just makes them more challenging to reach.

I wouldn't expect them to shut-off corn-based ethanol consumption, but relying at a single feedstock is not worth the risk.

Consider the impact that one washed out railroad bridge in the middle of nowhere has had on rail traffic in the West. I am still seeing trains parked on the tracks waiting for their turn on the bypass route.

All angst aside, If we are going to be swimming in domestic oil for the next twenty years or so, why not splurge? Cheap energy makes most everybody happy. Why hobble an already struggling economy with unnecessary mandates for heavily subsidized alternative fuels and unrealistic MPG targets?

When the crisis comes, we'll deal with it. Until then, lets enjoy life. If that attitude works for fiscal policy, it ought to work just as well for energy policy.

I will add, there is a lot of demand, politically, to maintain progress toward cleaner air. Overhauling the EPA, or even eliminating it, will not change that. Even without the EPA, CARB has had a tremendous impact on design for decades, as the single largest market is California.

Had CARB been so concerned about emissions as it is about bureaucracy, it would have been lobbying for a waiver on crash standards to benefit some vehicle classes that have inherent advantages when it comes to fuel-efficiency such as Kei cars and forward-control vans. Even though they wouldn't appeal to the "urban cowboys" who just want to show off their "Prius repellent" smoke stacks and extended towing mirrors to keep an eye on their ghost trailers, I'm sure there are enough penny-pinchers and commercial operators who would enjoy such move.

Even though I'm not favorable to a strict enforcement of current EPA standards when it comes to devices such as DPF and SCR, the crash standards are another matter of concern that might be more effective to prevent the entry of many vehicles with a higher efficiency than their American counterparts.
