minja 250 2010 mpg

Hi my name is Johnny and am new to this forum. I recently bought a 2010 kawasaki 250 for the mpg. It is completely stock. I added a fitch fuel cataylist to the fuel tank and a JDM voltage stabilizer to the battery. I get about 58 mpg on the freeway at about 9100 rpm. I plan an changing the gearing to increase the mpg. My goal is to get 80 mpg consistently out of it. I recently ordered a zero gravity sport touring windscreen for it. Any ideas to reach my goal I would really appreciate it. The bike is mainly for highway use.

9100 rpm? Holy smokes-how fast are you going? Slowing down will help. Sounds like you need to regear too. I'd shoot for something like 5000 rpms @55mph-that's what most of my bikes do.

I drive at 75 MPH. Yeah I was plannig on going 1 up on the front and 3 down on the rear. I am not trying to maximize the mileage but think 80 mpg is realistic. I am going to drive at 65 MPH.

That's a pretty big gearing change right off the bat. If you don't have too many miles on the sprocket/chain combo (you should always change chain and sprockets at the same time-so they say), you could change the counter shaft sprocket first and see how it works. If it's still useable then change the rear sprocket (you may only want to go down a tooth or two).

If your bike is like my Versys the speedo/ odometer will be off (signal comes from the transmission not the front wheel). You'll have to figure that for your speed and mileage.

I think 80 mpg is very doable, Kawaski rated the 2009 ninja 250 @ 61mpg.

I strongly reccomend visiting the jt sprockets site catalog (to identify part #s for your bike) and buyers guide: JT Sprockets: Catalogue

FYI, I went from a 47 to a 37 rear on my little gs without any problems. Off the line is slower but hiway rpms are way down as expected. I've had 100+mpg tanks, but I don't need to go 75mph either.

I had a 99 ninja 250, and even with 35k on the original engine I still got 70 mpg just tooling around town. It was asking a lot from the engine to do faster than 75mph, however. Just slowing down will give a big increase, if you can take the back roads I'd also recommend that. Mine was very happy in the 45~65 range.

same aerodynamic rules that apply to cars apply to motorcycles, you have alot of your drag on the rear of the vehicle and from open rough cavities.
At least for the older ninja you could get rear fender kits as the rear fender on yours tends to be a big chunk of plastic just hanging out there and what would make sense to me would to get a close fitting rear fender then as the air flow over the top of the tire is seeing the tire move at twice your road speed.

What gears are they putting on the newer Ninja's?! That's way too high. The older motor was higher strung, and it could still cope with doing 7k at 65 indicated.

I think I have a 14 tooth up front and 45 in the rear. I am now just cruising at 65 mph and see how I do. I just put a zero gravity sport touring screen on. I like to ride sitting up and not hunched over because I have a pinched nerve in my back. I also plan on getting a fender elminator kit for the rear to so thank you for bringing that up.
