53 MPG latest fill up

This might be the last fill of 2020 for the MPGiata...

No new mods this tank.

The weather has turned cooler, so the countdown is on for parking this one and switching back to the Mirage. Regular frost in the forecast!

But there are still a few fine autumn trips in store, I'm sure.

Correction: one more new aero mod!

This merits aero testing, because it makes a dramatic difference in airflow in the cabin:

I just did a top down 110 km round trip in 9C / 48F sunny weather, and was extremely comfortable with this setup ... dressed for it, and with the heat on the lowest fan setting. It made for a surprisingly warm, still bubble of air.

(It's a household AC unit.winter cover stretched over/ between the seatbacks.)

Without that wind block, I would have had to run the fan at the highest speed to fight a strong current of "outside" air flowing from back to front from behind the cockpit.

Binge drinking diagnosis

^ Oh stop it.

---

By chance, I discovered the conditions that cause the most oil consumption in this car: high engine vacuum.

There's one long-ish hill I regularly go down in 3rd gear, in fuel cut mode. I happened to glance in the rearview mirror and saw a cloud of smoke just when I got back on the gas (combustion re-commenced).

I even heard the engine ping briefly when combustion re-started ... that's gotta be a fair amount of oil in the cylinders to make it ping. The tail pipe is also oily inside.

I repeated the test on another hill and saw/heard the same result.

So... rings or valve seals?

Well, the fast way to decide is to put air under pressure into the cylinder through the plug hole and listen where the leaks come out. Breather means rings, intake means valves. I would bet rings in your case because I havent seen a comment regarding oil puffs on start up which is the traditional telltale for valve guides /seals.

That's a good idea.

Also, I may just ignore the problem.

On this current tank I've been doing a LOT less deceleration in gear, just to see if it makes any difference in oil consumption. I'm halfway through the tank so far. We'll see...

Results of oil consumption vs. driving style test...

^ HA!

---

Test results!

(preliminary)

I was pleasantly surprised to see that after 400 km / 250 miles of driving with minimal engine braking, there seems to be no change in the level of oil on the dipstick.

Oil consumption vs. brake pad consumption trade-off?

Of course, that's not much distance to be super-confident of the result. But I'm about to put the car away for the winter, so the continuation of the test will have to wait until next year!

Sounds like the oil control rings are shot. That would show up more during deceleration, when the compression rings aren't doing their thing.

hibernation, winter 2020/2021

Should I worry about it? I'm content to adjust my driving style to keep the oil burning in check.

Though I should probably check the spark plugs - they may be pretty fouled.

---

Anyway, today was the MPGiata's last drive for 2020. It has gone into hibernation. ( Mirage #2 is back on the road.)

The last top-down trip was Thursday evening @7C / 45F. Warm enough for in-town motoring with the heater on!
