I wouldnt have thought the USB power ran through the regulator, for that very reason. I thought the regulator would only be for the 12v power.

USB is standard at 5V 500 mA. That can vary PC to PC, but those are the IEEE specs.

I checked Kevins version of the schematic. The usb power does not use the regulator as wagonman indicated.

What I do know is that the screen works when it is connected to the external power supply and does not work when I use the USB. My USB voltage output reading on two different computers is less than 5V so maybe I am just unlucky. The good news is the lower voltage did allow the software to be downloaded as everything works. It was frustrating getting everything to work but I learnt much in the process. Thanks for all the feedback I keep learning new things.
