Didn't go to 'Nam, too statistically fatal for people from my high school. Signed up for Hound dog missile slung under armpits of B52, almost got sent to silos of Grand Forks NODAK instead.

We were very 'short.' Last few days spent at China Beach Surf Club. Lots of whiskey. A green smoke grenade on the nose of the long board. Lot's of fun until Apache helicopter and mini-guns inquired about the smoke.Probably the single-most stupid thing I've ever done. I owe my life to a very disciplined Army pilot.

I dunno, wasn't aware of too many china beach locals that were surfers back then, BUT, I wasn't there. Except for my crazy friend, not too many surfers in NODAK, either.

It was a US Marine Corps facility. A short commute by grenade-proof bus, from Gunfighter Village, Da Nang AB. Great Korean cuisine, evening outdoor movies, and a beach-break. No extra charge for jellyfish.

Afaik, surfing there was as safe as water skiing behind a patrol boat on the river until you took fire.
