Oh, thanks for the tip! I had missed/forgotten that that this could be done w/ bluetooth and a phone app for much cheaper than ScanGauge. I'd be willing to pay for a decent iPhone app that has Apple CarPlay support...the search is on!

Aaaaaand nevermind. For safety/liability reasons, Apple restricts the type of apps that can be used with CarPlay. Apps that show distracting car diagnostic information are not allowed, despite the fact that car manufacturers provide much of the same information on gauge clusters and sometimes in the infotainment screen.

Thanks! I don't think I'll be coming that close to 50 MPG on a regular basis, but on this particular route (which I drive once or twice a week typically) I can hopefully memorize the hill patterns a bit more and optimize things further. With a little luck regarding traffic and lights, I bet I can beat 50 MPG.

I just ordered a BT OBDII dongle and I'm looking forward to seeing if I can tweak my BSFC technique based on engine load. Fingers crossed that the dongle + app can provide adequate/accurate/timely load information.

If you use 87 octane, ethanol-free gasoline (E0), the computer will generally be more accurate, since 87 octane E0 gives 8% to 5% better MPG than 87 octane E10.

Just FYI, my accel technique: I go for max BSFC usually whan I intend to glide shortly after (engine off). Otherwise, I granny it at a high instant-MPG value, traffic permitting.

Pulse hard, glide long. Traffic restricts what you can do, but you've always got to have the ideal in sight.

Finally crested 50

This was on a 11.6 mile trip, the same route as my previous 12.6 @ 49.4 MPG minus the first mile (trip-MPG computer reset when I shut off the engine at a stoplight after the first mile).

This particular trip had almost-ideal circumstances. I did have to slow down to 5 MPH and start in 1st gear at a stop light, and it was a bit windy. Other than that I had the roads almost to myself so I was free to granny-it up the hills and lose speed, starting the coast at the crest of hills at ~5 MPH in a few cases.

58% improvement over EPA. Since I know my trip computer is ~1.5% optimistic, my next goal is 50.8 MPG to achieve > 50 MPG for real.
