I wouldn't consider it a heavy car at all. From the ford site the focus se with the 1.0 manual comes in at 2974. Thats light at least according to my standards, especially since its a decently roomy car. And it certainly feels light around the corners. But I do think the 1.0t has to work a little bit harder to get the car moving. Once its going and the turbo is spooled its got plenty of power but getting it going i have noticed requires a little bit more gas and clutch slip than I'm used to. So having this small of an engine does have its downsides but I'm really impressed with the power and mileage once the car is rolling a bit. I'll do my first fill up soon.

I guess that's a matter of perspective and what you're used to. My first Focus was just under 2600 lbs. My Civic is just under 2300lbs. My Echo was another 200lbs lighter than the Civic. Heck, my Mustang weighed about what your Focus does.

Cars have just gotten fat in the last decade.

Do let us know how the numbers are I still think the 1.0EB Focus and Fiesta are two of the neatest small cars we've gotten in the last 5-10 years.

Have a look at this thread to see the correlation between vehicle mass and actual real world fuel consumption for cars with 3 cylinder 1 litre engines.

The ford focus with 85kg driver/fuel is 46% heavier than Mitsubishi Mirage with 85 kg driver/fuel.

This results in an increase in real world fuel consumption of 39%.

Ideally the car should have been lighter but failing that the engine should have been bigger.

Interestingly, Ford has now stretched the engine to a 1.1 but so far only naturally aspirated versions of it has been released in the Ford Fiesta.

Without having seen specs of the recently revealed next generation Focus, I bet it's lighter than the prececessor.

IIRC some countries such as Italy and Portugal had a tax bracket that benefitted cars with 1100cc engines, but I'm not sure if it remains in effect. But anyway, I can only guess it may enhance the low-end torque a little and fare better when it comes to emissions even if the compression ratio gets a small decrease (more specifically NOx due to the lower aerodynamic heating to be generated at a lower compression).

Sorry I've been busy and forgot to update you guys! So as far as mpg its holding around 32 average with about 80% city driving and pretty normal driving technique. It seems to shine mostly on the highway where it has no trouble averaging 40 to 50, but in the city it has to be revved a little bit to keep up with busy traffic and that brings the average down. The on board mpg tracker seems to be accurate within a few tenths. I'm pretty happy with the mileage considering i don't really baby it and its a decently roomy and optioned car. It's been nice having a car that can go 400 miles before a fill up since the gas prices spiked recently!

As far as the car overall i'm still very happy. However, unfortunately there is one mechanical issue so far, I'm getting a kind of clunking sound intermittently between shifts mostly in 3rd and 4th (especially downshifts). It happens very rarely and doesn't effect the shifting of the car, but it is an annoying noise when it happens. I took it in but of course couldn't reproduce the issue with a tech in the car. I'm gonna have to wait until it happens more consistently or i figure out how to reproduce it. I'm not a mechanic, but it seems to me to be something slightly off in the clutch or flywheel. Obviously I'm a little disappointed in that but it doesn't actually have any impact on the driving and shifting of the car so I'm not gonna stress over it. Other than that its solid and I think it'll serve me well.

I was reading your post and thought about this recall but I guess your car is too new

Ford is issuing a safety recall in North America for approximately 6,000 2013-16 Ford Focus cars with 1.0-liter Fox GTDI engine and B6 manual transmission and 2013-15 Ford Fusion with 1.6-liter GTDI engine and B6 manual transmission vehicles for potential clutch plate fracture with risk of fire.
In affected vehicles, repeated high-energy clutch slip input made while a driver changes gears can lead to premature clutch lining wear, reducing the mechanical properties of pressure plate material. Repeated cyclic heating and cooling events may cause cracks around the outer edge of the pressure plate.
Torque capacity reduction due to clutch lining wear can cause excessive slip, introducing a large amount of energy and heat into the pressure plate. Structural failure or fracture of the pressure plate eventually may occur. Leaking transmission fluid near an ignition source can lead to the risk of an engine compartment fire.
Ford is not aware of any fires, accidents or injuries associated with this issue.
Affected vehicles include:
2013-16 Ford Focus vehicles with 1.0-liter Fox GTDI engines and B6 manual transmissions built at Michigan Assembly Plant, July 21, 2014 to June 30, 2016
2013-15 Ford Fusion vehicles with 1.6-liter Sigma GTDI engines and B6 manual transmissions built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, March 9, 2012 to June 28, 2014
The recall involves approximately 5,872 vehicles in North America with 5,357 in the United States and 515 in Canada. The Ford reference number for this recall is 18S07.
Dealers will update Focus vehicles with software that will detect and prevent prolonged clutch slip and will evaluate the clutch for wear and replace as needed.
