I wouldnt say open source is just to be afordable. It is a big factor, but this controller is also just as advanced as the big guys. The rest of the controller are built with some of the best parts avaiable, International Rectifier MOSFETS, Panasonic Caps, and the LEM HASS-300 current sensor.
Another solution would be to use a current shunt. The cost of the shunt is very cheep some times as cheep as $10. BUT, you will need a high accuracry AD converter to read the shunt as well as isolation circuitry, including another small. At this point you will have more into the cost of this circuitry then the LEM.

Where can I find an insulating strip for the transistors? I ordered a package to-3p mica insulators but I was thinking of using a single insulating strip instead.

I just added it to the wiki. Unfortunately, they sell them in sheets of 8" x 16", and you probably don't need that much. Here's the part number that I use, and seems to work well:

hahaha. I should do a signature about diarrhea. It would be interesting to see if they would advertise about some anti-pepto-bismal or something. "I still have diarrhea even after dose after dose of the pink stuff."
OK, I need to do that friggen SR control board. Here's the question I have... Can one optocoupler output drive, say, 2 drivers each? I think it can. And d  o I have to have each driver have its own isolated supply? Thats more expensive, and is possibly unnecessary |

More likely that one optocoupler will drive 2 drivers, but, will the signal be in withing spec's?
About the power supply, a shared supply will suffice for boths drivers taking in consideration that this drivers will NOT drive different segments of the circuit.
I still have the dreams of having the completed SR controller in my hands and in working conditions powering my bench trany/motor assembly.

If that's true -  Look up Celiac Disease - English, Irish, Scottish,(Celtic people) have the gene for it and it can switch on with trauma.. LOL Once on, you are allergic to Gluten -- oh yah!
Of course there is much more to it -- then again maybe you were funning
