More data: Today was 10°C, the heater was on for 60 minutes, ending with an engine temperature of 31°C. Looks like 50°C will be out of the question, at least until next year's heat wave.

Any measurable effects on FE or warm-up times yet ?

Or until you layer some of this over your engine:

The last two times I've driven my FE was 4.5 l/100km instead of 4.8, so that may be related, maybe not.

I wonder if the EGR/coolant heat exchanger helps in my case, since EGR is closed when in idle and when at full load, and that is 90% of my P&G driving style. But when the wife drove the other day (no P&G), then the engine got up to temp very fast, so block heater plus EGR cooler must have helped. In 2-3 weeks I hope to get an emissions test done.

Back to modding: I started a new thread to show the superb ergonomics of my cockpit:
The Show Off Your Cockpit Thread

Meanwhile, the kill switch is working Sometimes, when I kill the engine, the car starts to beep, the dashboard's STOP light comes on and the display says "Oil pressure low". (Sorry for the crappy resolution.)

But sometimes I get no warnings. I believe it depends on how long the kill switch is held down, it may also depend on the vehicle's speed. I'll get the hang of it sooner or later.

Congrats for your kill switch

About the warning, could it be caused by battery's voltage ?

Currently with the lights and the cold weather after 20km of P&G using my kill switch my battery's voltage is going under 11V (*) when the heat plugs are switching on, which is 2x8 seconds each time I switch off the engine. A consequence of such a low voltage is that the airbag light is blinking when the alternator is off. As my car beeps only for forgotten lights, I have no auditive warning, but battery, oil and sometimes airbag lights are on.

Denis.

(*) I'm looking for a good deep cycle battery to replace my 50Ah one...

Look for a battery for a newer diesel car - 70-90 Ah.

Nowadays there are also batteries designed to take more stop/start cycles.

No, voltage is OK (around 12.4-12.8V). It's the oil pressure sensor setting off the alarm before it notices that the engine isn't turning. Thankfully, the ECU doesn't throw a code, or at least so says the SGII

Varta makes batteries for cars with Start/Stop systems:
VARTA Start-Stop Batteries
For example, the Varta battery for the Volvo V50 1.6D w/ Start-Stop has 70 Ah and serial number 570 901 076 B512. No idea what price.

OK, I'm giving up on the heating element inside the oil pan idea, but maybe a heating pad that sticks to the underside of the oil pan? Between 100-150 watts should be just right. I looked around and the only company that seems to make automotive pads for 240 volts is Canadian Titan Heaters. They're not exactly cheap, and if I factor in shipping across the pond, then I might as well get another coolant heater here locally. The only heating pads available in my neck of the woods are either side mirror defrosters (12V, 5-13W), or electric floor panels (100-200W per sq. meter).

Why can't I find what I'm looking for closer to home? And does it have to be expensive?

EDIT: Is anyone else interested in a heating pad?

I'll sit back and await results on this one. I'm not as extreme as you are yet but maybe someday...
