Interstellar Travel Without Breaking Physics with Andrew Higgins

Watching this wll put you 1:20:16 into the future. The proposal combines dynamic soaring with a sail that rides on the solar wind instead of photons. They suggest reaching 2-3% of light speed in Solar orbit and then 20-30% light speed in transit.

1) So the 'sail' will act as a terrestrial sail, producing lift in a relative 'wind'? And Mr. Higgins has calculated the density ( rho ) of the solar wind. And how many centuries it would take to accelerate a mass up to 5,580-miles/ second?
2) And then, as one orbits the solar system, somehow enough thrust can be created by harvesting the solar wind, such to overcome the inertia of the craft and successfully deflect it out of orbit, and somehow continue to accelerate it's mass, on a wind with it's strength falling off as the inverse-square of it's distance from the Sun, which reaches 'zero' velocity at 100 Astronomical Units from the Sun?
That would be a pretty good parlor trick.

Agreed.

I shan't watch it again to find the answers to your questions, and I had my own.

In the Solar System would probably be an outward spiral to the Heliopause, but quick compared to the remaining distances. Stars are strung like beads on a string in plasma tubes that would move particles. But knowing the navigation routes would require ingesting some spice only available on Arrakis. At least according to Herbert.

'spice'

There may come a time when I'd want a taste of that.

Frank Herbert said the inspiration for Dune was the sand dunes at Florence Oregon. Reading the books is as close as I'll likely come.

To Arrakis, or to Florence? You do realize how close you are to Florence, right?

To interstellar travel. My son and I road-tripped the Coast last week, Lincoln City to Newport. Lunch at the Sea Hag in Depoe Bay.

If im not mistaken spice tended to kill male users and if it didn't, did not grant prescience. Apparently a female only thing.

Everybody was sure it was going to kill what's his name.

Once they can create a zygote from a pluripotent stem cells, fathers would be as unneeded as mothers.

Couples obsolete, AI becomes the nanny.
