My buddy had a Lifan bike that was a Honda cr knockoff. The Lifan motor lasted only a coupe of sessions then the transmission crapped out. It was the cheapest pos I've ever seen. Those Lifan engines are common on the cheap bikes and the general consensus is go with a Honda engine or a better manufacture. (lookup pit bikes and see what the mini Moto or pit bike guys are using on thier race rigs. There is a wealth of info on motors out there.

I recently got a Harbor Freight engine which I understand Lifan builds. I guess racers love these things and they can be hopped up quite a bit with the same parts Hondas use. When I put it on something I'll find out first hand about any quality issues, but it sure looks nice just sitting there.

A Honda would be better of course but a bit more pricey .The ideal would be a 150cc fuel injected model from which ever country they sell them in.

Vetter on EFI

Back on Oct 29, I wrote: "My understanding is that EFI is mostly to meet governmental emission requirements. EFI improvements in performance are measurable at high altitudes. EFI improvements may - or may not - be measurable at very low RPM where atomization can be better with EFI. That said, without government interference, carbs are the choice of virtually all racers in virtually all races. They are my choice, too.

Has anybody done a side-by-side conversion test?"

I found such a test at Scoot Magazine. April Whitney , the editor, gave me permission to reproduce this article for you:
"In the second test, the carbureted Vespa LX150is represented by the blue line, the injected Vespa LX 150 in the red. The power lines seem to be identical, just offset. The carbureted bike produces higher peak power at 6.98 hp whereas the fuel-injected model reaches 6.42 hp max. On the surface, the difference seems negligible. Yet, when you consider that the carbureted engine is tunable in a home garage with some simple jetting changes, it is possible to get a little more power out of that bike, which is not the case with the fuel injected engine.
So, what’s the benefit of the fuel injected model? Better emissions, fuel economy (about 10 mpg better) and reliability. If you could walk into a dealership and were offered both of these bikes at full retail, you would be looking at a $300 difference in favor of the carb version. Not much of a difference.
The verdict? Carb model slightly edges out the i.e. on power. Email: april@scootmagazine.com"

The EFI burns less fuel because it generates less power. I also learned that EFI will use crummy American gas and not clog up like carbs.

As I mentioned in post #96, for that to happen (carb outperforming FI) I believe the FI map must not be precisely adjusted. That is pretty common.

Once adjusted properly, I'm convinced the FI unit will outperform the carb unit - not just in HP, but also in efficiency where the throttle openings are minimal.

Usually, tuning a FI system requires an adjustable aftermarket fuel control unit like a Bazzaz or a Power Commander. In some ways it is more involved than changing carb jets, but in other ways it's easier - tuning with a black box and a laptop instead of pulling the carb (s) and replacing jets.

I own both carbed and FI cycles, and have no problems working with either, but I feel FI systems provide more accurate fuel delivery and efficiency.

Why put MORE money into the hands, of a country, which has taken most of our jobs and we will probably have to fight someday? Cheaper is not "always" better...just my opinion.

I would love for B&S or Onan or whoever to be more price competitive but they ain't even in the ballpark.

Frank, are you looking for just a gas engine? I bought a 5HP Honda on ebay for $25. I can rebuild it, I trust it will last a long time, and Japan has many Americans employed here.

I searched Craigslist first and found either junk or high prices.

What will you have in it when it's done?

Sometimes even I want something new.
