Were one to compare Porsches, which comes out on top?
Aerogel (as a category) can't compare to the Vector Equilibrium, because it is highly ordered while aerogel is amorphous.
NASA chose a cubic lattice because they are trapped in a Cartesian paradigm.

It's late and I just found this. I should think about it some more.
I suspect there is a learning curve. They give away 3000 hours of computer time with the caveat that everything is in public domain, then you can pay for private access once you're up the curve.
