Hydrogen it's even lighter than Helium, having better result in balloons or dirigibles. The Hindenburg was designed for helium, but due cost and supply problem turn it into hydrogen, giving it some extra load capacity.

In a documentary they said hydrogen was'nt the cause of the explosion, but the final result of the explosion of Hindenburg. In one point the documentary talked about possible return of hydrogen, due safer materials for revest or encapsulate, protections against electrical discharge etc..., but when they start to talk about modern material they only showed to small dirigible with helium or projects to future helium dirigibles.

Helium will end one day. You don't have technology to remove helium from atmosphere, since it's so little as few parts per million.
Helium cames fro mines of natural gas with a percentage of helium, and USA it's the worldwide leader in Helium reserves.

I've got no problem floating with H2. Most of the people on the Hindenburg lived, and most of the casualties were ground crew.

I still don't get how we mine helium. I mean, the stuff isn't even contained in mylar, so how does porous earth trap it? How are there pockets of anything considering the earth's crust is constantly shifting?

Anyhow, what's the latest on the interview?

I remamber about one stupid startup, that wished to create wind generators using helium, giant helium ballons to rotate. But they tried to lie, to give a impression helium was endless, and they started sayng : "The second most abundant element on the universe..."
They just forgot a "tiny little detail..." that on Earth it's not abundant and quite expensive to this aplication.

Helium and hydrogen leaks. Hydrogen leaks even in steel tanks. But leaking in low pressure it's slow, I presume.

We must start to try to save helium, let it just to science and other important applications, since without it science will get serious problems. Helium ballons for parties, for example, should be forbidden.

Hydrogen does not produce orange flames and smoke. The powdered aluminum in the doped fabric skin does.

A hot hydrogen vacuum would provide the maximum possible lift. So how would you architect that?

Here is a tensegrity [prolated] sphere, to a rough approximation. It could be put into an aerobody of revolution and filled (emptied?) with hydrogen at a <1bar pressure. The heat would be contained by an enveloping blanket within the aerobody, filled with steam.

Pure steam has almost the lift of helium, but by adding or withholding heat it is dynamic.

What about the energy to keep it hot ?

Since it's Steampunk, probably coal?

Have you seen Aeromodeller2? Their website hasn't updated since 2016:

Aeromodeller2

Quote:
The Aeromodeller2 is a design for a zero-emission, autonomous, nomad hydrogen-based airship that will never land.

The ship regenerates its fuel, creating hydrogen from wind power and the rain on its skin.
When it depletes its energy reserves, the ship drops anchor and rests, in order to replenish its energy in a renewable way.

Hydrogen isn't flammable as long as you keep oxygen away from it.

Yeah, I heard of solar balloms :

WORLD'S FIRST FULLY CERTIFIED AEROSOLAR FLIGHT — Aerocene

Anyway it's danger, since hydrogen would be easy to mess around and end up in :
