Probably not an issue for me as I will eventually part with the Cummins and get an electric truck... once affordable used ones hit the market AND I can justify owning a truck. CyberTruck still tempts me. I really need 6+ seating.

A gallon of DEF last about 750 miles in my Duramax. It cost $7 a gallon (in a jug - less at a pump) so that is about $0.01 per mile for DEF. A delete is about $1500 for parts - double that to have the work done. That is a LONG payback to increase emissions with no benefit.

I defer to your expertise. My hunch was I could probably scrounge together whatever I needed to delete the stuff on the cheap, but I have not looked into it whatsoever.

750 miles is almost every tank of fuel. Would prefer to avoid the 1:1 relationship of DEF and refueling. Fortunately I do by owning a truck that predates the requirement, and as I said, will probably avoid it entirely by skipping to electric.

So far I've never had need of long distance trucking, so EV is probably fine.

If you can hack the ECU and code I guess you could do it on the cheap. Otherwise you have to buy someone else's tune and tuner. Nobody doesn't just a DEF delete - the kits delete it all - EGR, DEF, and DPF.


750 miles is for 1 gallon of DEF. My Express has a 5.83 gallon (20 liter) DEF tank. So I need to fill DEF about every 4400 miles (GM says 5,000). At 15 mpg the 57 gallon tank goes 855 miles. So I need to fill the DEF tank about every 5 tanks of fuel.

Have you forgotten about the SCR emulators which are available in Eastern Europe and parts of Africa and Latin America? Not exactly a delete, as it retains all the SCR hardware.

I was at Walmart yesterday and IIRC the DEF was 2 gallons for 7 bucks? If it lasts 1500 miles, is that worth the trouble of deleting?

Have you forgotten that redpoint and I live in the USA?

I'm aware that SCR deletes exist as the company I work for has legal ones that they sell to dealers outside of the USA to legally deregulate diesel vehicles that have been exported from the USA to countries with lower emission standards. Those aren't for sale inside the USA.

In the USA the people that sell illegal emission delete kits sell kits that delete everything - SCR, DPF, and EGR and then throw in grossly polluting tune.

No - it isn't. As a bonus if you delete emissions most dealerships will not work on your vehicle.

All emissions deletes I am aware of occur because of vehicle totalling failure of the emissions equipment.

Thankfully my 82 diesel suburban and 2001 TDI didn’t have expensive emissions equipment.
