I don't really hate non-CRT screens, at least not to the same extent you seem to do, but I used to be satisfied with CRT when I still had to rely on them on a nearly-exclusive basis. Didn't even get impressed when I had my first LCD computer monitor. Well, sometimes I still get angry when I remember the day I was moving back to Porto Alegre from Florianópolis and my father gave nearly all of our old TVs to a guy who worked at the condominium we were living prior to my move. Among those, there was a 14" Sharp older than me which was still working great, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's still working in someone else's home with a digital converter...

So what principle does this new tech work on?

As I understand existing tech, LEDs produce "white" light either by a combination of red, green, blue LEDs in either a single epoxy package, or by using a blue LED and a phosphorus coating that converts blue into white.

My understanding also was that RGB LEDs can be extremely efficient, like into the 90% range. It tends to be the higher power stuff that is inefficient since efficiency drops with heat.

In 23th century (Star Trek universe), CRT dislays was still curved, instead of flat screen :

I wonder why they didin't used special effects, very simple one needed here, instead of a CRT TV screen, for these scene.

LED get head, and so reduced efficience, whichgenerates more heat... So if we had Global Warming LEDs will shine less. Well, this could be a add against Global Warming.

The new LEDs use a different material, a combination, that have high efficience and it's also cheaper. Besides that, the princeple are the same, I guess.

In many ways we've got more advanced technology than science fiction imagined, and nobody is impressed. Cell phones are way more feature packed than Star Trek communicators. Smart watches are way more capable than the Dick Tracy watch. Doors do open and close for people... at supermarkets. We can talk to computers and give them commands. Our screens are flat and thin, and can display buttons that are relevant rather than dedicating mechanical buttons to a single function.

Star Trek communicators had a knob to turn down the squelch.

Speaking as a journalist, yes, this is a pretty sticky problem.
Speaking as a (one-time) software developer, technical documentation is the crux. Translating and structuring the musings of deeply autistic geniuses in a way interpretable by the [average] normie is non-trivial.

Buttons need some physical elements, cause if all depends of a large touch screen, a crack on glass and it's over.
Cell phone can't reach a space station without numerous antennas around the wold to help send and receive electromagnetic waves between cell phones and powerfull parabolic transmissor able to reach space, but Star Trek comunicators can.

Looking to original series props, I see no knov button, or no one that look like that.

I was going from memory, didn't Cpt. Kirk cradle it in his left hand and twiddle something with his right?

I failed to convince my son he needs one of these on his desk at work: youtube.com/results?search_query=bluetooth+star+trek

I loved the GOTO 22 inch telescopes that tracked one galaxy cluster within a Galaxy Supercluster. Then, used celestial coordinates to move to the next galaxy cluster within the Galaxy Supercluster, to help with comparative cluster studies. Oh, yeah! That's so publicly blase & old fashioned with 1980's & 90's tech, now.

Was watching Darth Vader line up his TIE fighter behind one of the Rebels. Adjusting a gismo, I always thot Vader was setting the intermittent windshield wipers.

The screw-in LED-enclosed light bulb implementation seems so in-efficient, even today. I have some old screw-in flat-face LEDs with no spherical enclosures..... plus they can be rotated to the direction you need the light. Such a set-up, allows 7-watt LED lights to replace 100-watt Incandescent bulbs. Without the enclosure, the small amount of LED heat doesn't build up in the light that would have shortened the life of the LED bulbs. Two have lasted 8 to 10 years, & each has saved 2500 to 3000 kW-hrs of electricity. A third only lasted 6 years, but still saved plenty of kW-hrs.
Characteristically, these LEDs, may NOT have been made in communist china(always small letters).
