The UK used to use Trolley buses, here seen in Glasgow.

They were known as the "Whispering Death", due to the number of pedestrians they knocked down.

When I was a kid, I used to ride similar buses when I visited my grandparents in Portland, OR.

The Southern Pacific Red Line had run within two miles of where I grew up, but it was gone by then. Prolly a victim of the conspiracy.

Despite its short history, among West Coast interurbans it was unique, and it was considered the finest such system in the Pacific Northwest. It was the only major electric interurban railroad converted from steam to electric passenger use. It was also one of few systems using all-steel equipment, and one of the largest 1500-volt systems in the country.

If you told them that, you would be lying. Heating and cooling take power, and lots of it*. That power has to come from somewhere, whether it's fossil fuels, nuclear power, or your rooftop solar panels. That's not even considering what it'd do to your range.

Perhaps a century of living with the IC engine and its loads of waste heat has blinded people to this, but drive your Insight down a long mountain road in winter, and you'll learn :-)

*Unless the car is very well insulated, and the ones I've seen don't look like they have even R-13 insulation, which is way low for house construction.

Still used in many European cities, at least as of a few years ago.

They didn't say it didn't take any power. Just said it is comfortable to set a departure time or remotely have the cabin already climate controlled before you get in.

Perhaps overhead power lines over major freeways could serve the dual purposes of providing electricity to vehicles, and delivering grid power.

JockoT — That's it. Eastmoreland is right across the street from Reed College, where Steve Jobs dropped out of school. The grandparents lived in the Hollywood district.

Here's the picture Google picked to represent all of Eastmoreland:

Car bodies will start to have more insulation and heat pumps, like the new Leaf.

We should change the title of this thread--it's officially the "Model 3." Tesla lost a trademark infringement suit some time back to Adidas (die Weltmarke mit den drei Streifen).

If your car is sitting in your garage or drive the power it uses to condition the cabin environment actually comes from your charger/mains, so you should still leave with a full charge in the morning. As long as you are connected to a charger it is not an issue.
