Another way to "hack" without even touching the computer is to fool it's inputs. It only knows the battery charge level because a sensor is telling it. Or piggyback an aftermarket charger. I don't think it has been done because up until a few weeks ago there was no reason to do it. Now there is. Also it wouldn't be as big a market when the cars are brand new but give it awhile when there are off warranty cars. As there are more and more salvage cars there will be a market or if upgrading batteries or motors in the future becomes a thing they will need computers reprogrammed or completely replaced. This will be hot rodding 10 years from now. Make a dual motor from an old single motor, make a high performance rwd version with no traction control as a drift car, make smaller battery lightweight cars for max acceleration. Mainly it will be people and independent shops that want to fix their own cars. Especially Tesla continues to fail in this area.

Damien McGuire replaces the control boards to get the controllers and chargers to function. EVTV sends CANbus signals and has some hardware to fake hard-wired signals (like the High voltage interlock). Again, if someone has dis-assembled (or even got the code out of the non-labelled and perhaps proprietary chips) Tesla's firmware - please publish!

I don't have references .. so it is possible that I thought some of the autopilot sensor signals have been hacked .. but maybe not .. the description that I remember is that they appear to be semi-intelligent sensors sending raw, un-processed data.
I think the cameras are just cameras, but some people have managed to generate a glimpse of what AP perceives, so to speak.

looks like this guy has all the access to the computer that Tesla has. Like he says, as long as one has physical access to the computer there isn't much Tesla can do to prevent changes.

hacking

Hospitals are being hacked with ransomware. They're just closing there doors and letting patients die on their gurneys.
Hospitals, bio-medical products,and computers,what a stupid idea.

I saw a Model 3 at the Arcimoto open house. And a PEBL.

That's why I still read Slashdot every day. Here's a consecutive run of headlines on the front page
  • Russia-Linked Hackers Using Sophisticated Backdoor To Hijack Exchange Servers (securityweek.com)
  • Feds Nab Exec On Allegations He Hacked To Steal Info About School Lunches (theregister.co.uk)
  • 'Is TikTok a Chinese Cambridge Analytica Data Bomb Waiting to Explode?' (qz.com)
  • After City Switched To a New Bodycam Vendor, Axon Threatened Its Credit Score (muckrock.com)
  • MongoDB Database Containing Over 275 Million Personal Records Exposed and Hacked (bleepingcomputer.com)
Of course these are between the headline
Experimental Device Generates Electricity From the Coldness of Space (phys.org) and Does Recycling Work? (greenthatlife.com) . So it's not all bad.

Where did this happen?

My previous employer did nothing for a long time to harden against ransomeware. I had to restore extensive amounts of data from backup about every two weeks because of it.

My current employer creates a private network for each treatment node and provides the slimmest of attack surface to the outside. Hacking 1 machine would not affect the others.

The entire process can work offline if necessary.

I think the thing to remember is anything can be hacked. Whether it's brute force in the wild west, takin over the town or robbing the bank/train, cracking the enigma code, covert espionage, keyloggers, ransomware, etc.

Its human nature to gain an advantage over others then exploit it.

That's why so many people go to college right? To gain a knowledge advantage to allow them to earn more money or be preferred to be hired?

I was far more interested in the knowledge advantage than alcohol and parties. My collegiate career completely lacked the last two and I liked it that way.

I just wonder how the party types graduate. The classmate that graduated with me and posted on Facebook "Callege educated. I grajuated" seemed to be an atrocious student and a friend said her sorority sisters must have given her test answers. I made the mistake of sitting behind her once and earned a C in that class.

I needed to sit as close to the professor like normal.

I just tried to find out if she ever went to grad school and it appears that she did, but it appears that it was not for speech therapy.

I periodically wonder what became of my classmates, but really just the one guy that was friendly. Unfortunately, I lost contact with him a while ago.
