It does surprise me that we live in a society where to most people, it's worth a couple grand to not be seen as a person who owns something with a scratch in it.

A few years ago I hit a raccoon in rural Indiana that tore my front bumper cover. A few zip ties and it was functionally just fine, and then this last winter when I had some free time I patched it up with a few bucks' worth of fiberglass cloth. It's ridiculous that most people would have opened an insurance claim, gotten a new bumper cover and front spoiler (the frontmost part of the plastic undertray), paint, and labor, paying out several thousand dollars, for what amounts to purely cosmetic damage. Not to mention the abject waste of discarding several large, perfectly functional plastic pieces and replacing with new.

I personally find the top of the line Honda Odyssey to be 200% more luxurious than a model 3 and it is the least expensive car to insure. The difference in average cost of a full cover policy would buy over 15,000 miles worth of gas in an Odyssey.

The problem though is the difference in clout. A minivan probably has more negative clout than driving a Prius. lol

A couple years ago Toyota took a Sienna SE, stripped the interior, replaced the hood with carbon fiber, routed a new engine air intake to the front wheel housing, and fitted a roll cage, racing bucket and Enkei wheels with performance tires. It was as fast around Laguna Seca as a contemporary Camaro SS.

Regarding the Youtube money system above, a few days ago TFLcar who had the Model 3 4 months, 3 of which it was in the body shop, are trading it in on a new Model X. Seems like the Tesla youtube game is a good money maker. They plan on actually off roading it, doing their normal Ike gauntlet tow test with 5000 pounds behind, and then making an adventure rig out of it, towing a small off road trailer. I have no doubt they will make that $91,000 back in short order no matter what happens as all things Tesla is gold on Youtube now.
