Further proof of how common and accepted hyperrealism is now. Make a clicky baity video with an extravagant title that everyone wants to believe, video blows up, enjoy the profits. We may be living in the simulation.

(Hyperreality: A tool for manipulating crowds available to anyone who has acquired a level of fame that automatically confers credibility on anything they do, however outrageous, enabling such people to put together a project that crosses the borderline to the absurd without anyone noticing.)

Do you have a source? Baudrillard? I think of hyperreality as a trope in cinema, like the [mind-blowing] ending of Lawn Dogs. I think even The Sisters Brothers went hyperreal at the end.

Other than a slightly dislocated bumper, and a damaged plastic underbody part, you can see bugger all on it from the outside ...

Yet ...

There's 4000+ € in repair costs, on a rather generous 6300€ remaining value
(actually, the asking price of the single second-hand CNG VW up! available online in Belgium , but with only 2/3rds my kilometers)

So for the insurance, it's an economical write-off ...

By my calculation, that's 63%. In the USofA generally it would be declared a total loss at 70%. In the Sate of Oregon, it's 80%. That fact kept my Superbeetle off a salvage title about 5 years ago.

I agree but in the case of Tesla (extra heavy, with aluminum over unibody) it means it (along with any other cars going this route) are going to be expensive to repair with minor collisions and therefore unavoidably more expensive to insure. The trucks being built with aluminum escape this by having the traditional steel frame underneath and available and easy to replace panels on top.

Would be better to avoid the wreck and just build the batteries as needed.

There is a bitter irony on this issue with respect to my i3. BMW made them relatively easy to repair with very modular construction, but the parts cost against massive depreciation has rendered far more cars to the salvage lot for relatively minor damages. They are simply less expensive to total due to the higher return on salvage sales (presumably mostly for batteries that people are enthusiastic to snatch up).

Apparently a lot. I almost bought a Model S pack 9one of the individual modules not the whole thing) last summer to build an E bike. It was around 550 ish $, and the work out price for each 18650 (panasonic 3250 mAh if I remember correctly) was $0.81/ea. Thats pretty fantastic. But I seem to always lean towards another gas powered project and scrap those electric e bike ideas.
