Seems crazy to tediously dismantle a battery when the Gigafactory is churning out cells faster than a machine gun. Would be best if Tesla sold them at retail or even through 3rd party resellers like Mouser. If people got their hands on that format, new products might get created around it strengthening demand and creating a larger market for Tesla. I can't see how it's cheaper to get a junkyard battery given the labor involved, even if you got it at 25% of the retail price.

I saw my second tesla in new mexico today.
The paint made it look like a 15 to 20 year old car and the body panels didn't look quite right.

The giga guys I know say they are pressed just to keep up with tesla demand. There were expectations of a capacity doubling remodel that afaik didn't happen.

Panasonic announced that they are not increasing capacity because additional capacity isn’t needed.
There are two “silos” at the gigafactory: Panasonic makes the cells and Tesla assembles them into modules and then battery packs. Is the bottleneck your friends are reporting in cell production or assembly? |

It's been at least a few months, but I recall reports of a large portion of cells being rejected for quality issues which is likely the chief problem here. Panasonic aknowledged as much if I'm not mistaken.

Ah... Yeah the glue is a little much. Reminiscent of why they are called the Apple of car brands. Anyways yeah 0.81$ a cell vs 5.50 each for new retail cells makes it worth it to me. 15% of original msrp isn't bad at all. And yeah that's why tesla started using 18650 cells originally. Because that format was the most common. You can buy 18650 or 21700 cells anywhere you want on the internet, but by far the model s packs were the most cost effective.

Not a new theory and entirely probable. I'm surprised Jack didn't weigh in on solar/renewables at the same time as they are targeting much the same market. While most of us here are aware of how much better life would be be producing our own inexpensive, non-polluting fuel from the sun there will always be people who want to maintain the fossil fuel status quo. And that doesn't even include the fossil fuel companies themselves. I have an acquaintance who owns and works on Harley Davidson motorcycles. I asked him about their new line of electrics. He said he would never ride one because he wants to be heard for safety reasons when he is riding. I suggested he should put a loudspeaker on the bike to reproduce the Harley noise and he looked at me as though I was crazy. He wouldn't even consider trying one just to see what it could do.
Oh well. We'll win in the long run. Just hope there is something left to win.

The tesla guys talk a lot about a variety of stuff mostly poor fit & pita assemblies, lack of parts, the Panasonic ones don't say much about their stuff but do talk about the crap building. The battery side seem smarter than the assembly guys.
