I would also prefer a physical keyboard even on a modern smartphone. On a sidenote, now that so many gadgets and appliances can be operated from a smartphone as a remote control, it would not surprise me if they eventually could become used as a driving interface too. I still believe it's more likely to succeed than fully-autonomous cars.

That's enough grille opening for about 1500hp worth of radiators and intercoolers.

The touch screens need duckduckgo.com/?q=haptic+feedback

I know the OP was specifically calling out the cyberpunk aesthetic as hideous, and I initially and normally agree. The reveal of the CyberTruck made me instantly hate the thing because it looks ridiculous... then somehow the look grew on me.

Now I'd consider getting a used CyberTruck when prices get down to the $20-$25k range. I fully expect to revert back to my original instinct of thinking it looks stupid, but if the thing has good utility and reliability then I can get over it.

Agreed about haptic, that would make it a little better. Maybe the next innovation is a deformable touch screen so that buttons can present themselves when needed and fade away when not.

That would be interesting too. Makes me wonder to which extent a deformable touch screen may also increase the accuracy of an use as a driving interface, and how that could enable automakers to cut a lot of the cost of developing LHD and RHD variants.

The first Toyota built on the platform will be a 2022 midsized CUV for Europe. They are suppose to reveal it to the world this summer but some renders slipped out of the patent office:

Looks like a CUV to me - not too different than the latest RAV4

The new ID.4 looks like a normal CUV too.

My theory on Toyota's obsession with gaping maw grilles is that it's partly a result of having hydrogen vehicles in their line-up.

If I'm not mistaken, the H2 cars actually NEED gaping maws for fuel cell-related heat exchange duties.

Maybe Toyota's trying to get us used to the styling around H2 cooling demands.

I always wanted a sci-fi future, but the version of Cyberpunk that they're jamming down our throats with styling doesn't mesh with the realities of the world we live in. I don't need a harshly-shaped crossover SUV, I need a damn subcompact.

Hopefully when it's time for my next vehicle, someone other than Chevrolet will have built the car that I actually want. The Bolt is almost perfect, other than the price, and looks like a reasonable car.

The Bolt is going new for low to mid 20s right now (manufacturer and Costco discounts), and Oregon buyers could get up to $5k in rebates. Used '17 examples are going for $14k and could be $11.5k after Oregon rebate. Prices might be even lower when the stop-sale lifts.

If I can get into a '17 Bolt for under $10k, it's a no-brainer for me.

This was my conclusion as well.

My EV of choice right now is probably the Ioniq Plug-in. The depreciation on these is so sharp, that even 2017 models are a steal. Unfortunately they're still outside of my price range.
