Toyota Yaris Hybrid R (420 hp, AWD)

Yeah, I kinda laughed when I saw the specs too. Interesting vehicle and technology though. 1.6L direct injection turbo puts out 300 hp. Then it has two 60hp motors for a combined 420hp. Oh yeah, and its AWD (FWD = gas, RWD = electric). Sounds fun.

Another cool thing it mentions is the 'traction control' system doesn't kill power to the engine if it detects wheel spin. Instead it engages the generator to charge up the pack if the engine is putting out too much power. Neat idea for a race car.

It uses super-capacitors to provide 40HP for 10 seconds or 120HP for 5 seconds (in the race version). I need to start reading up on the capacitors now... that sounds great.

On our test drive, we averaged more than 60 mpg from the little Yaris, but with under 100 horsepower it was no ball of fire to drive.

edit:

Oh wait, they were comparing it to the current one,... I haven't seen any mpg numbers then, but only been searching a little.

I bet you could do pretty good with a 1.6L direct inject turbocharged engine... IF you could keep your foot out of it!

Looks like something that is built to hunt down and kill Fiat 500s. It's the black sheep of the mini-car family, completely rogue.

I like it

My question would be Is there an EV only mode? Then you could have the best of both performance when want it and efficiency.

If I were in the market and that was on the market, I would totally be looking at one of those.

The articles keep saying it's a GRE, but I don't know what that means? It's not the engine code, because E stands for electronic injection whicch this is not.

I agree with night9, there's a boost button, there better be an eco button (at least on a production, non-racing model).

I wonder if they employed Valvematic tech or left it old school with a throttle.
