Here is a third one:

1997 Honda Civic Hx

Yuma is three hours away. I cannot take a bus there. The seller says that he or she would meet somewhere in the Phoenix area for a serious buyer. It has 192,000 miles, which is the most that I have seen, but only 12,000 a year. I think that I would rather pay a little more for one driven a little less.

There are now seven HXes listed. One was supposed to be sold on Sunday, two have Salvage titles, one of those is an automatic, and the owner of one is "too busy" to have his car inspected.

No inspection no buy. Automatic no buy. I personally would rather have a well maintained car with high miles than low questionable miles. Good luck.

When he told me that he did not have time for a mechanic I thanked him for his time. I am trying to replace an automatic. An HX with an automatic would still get much better mileage, but that is almost irrelevant. What is worse, automatics apparently lack lean burn.

whole point of the HX is lean burn. wtf automatic tranny doesnt have lean burn? hard to believe, but maybe(?). but yeah, and automatic is no way to hypermile; not by a long shot

The 97 manual is rated 31/39 and the automatic is 29/35. From Ryland: "Yes, the Civic HX with the CVT has a 4 wire o2 sensor instead of the wide band 5 wire o2 sensor, so it doesn't have lean burn with the CVT either" http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...tml#post290511

Shouldn't a CVT be at least theoretically more efficient than a normal automatic? I do not know what the best comparison would be, but a 2,013 Corolla is 26/34 and the manual is 27/34.

Strangely, the automatic transmissions in the Focus have a higher EPA rating than the manuals, which is why my father bought his first automatic.

According to Wikipedia, lean burn is on "2000–06 Insight Manual transmission & Japanese spec Cvt only" Lean burn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cvt trans on them I notorious for failing. They go bad and are all well good luck finding a used one. You could get an auto that has a bad trans and do a swap but that is probably more than most want to do as the 5 speeds are easy enough to find.

THis caught my attention a couple years ago too. Looking at different late models, across the various trims, reveals that the auto transmissions usually have better gearing for FE than do their MT counterparts. Very disappointing. Seems the car makers think only "sport" buyers want the MT.

I see a bunch of complaints on here about gearing being too sporty.

Yet another HX! Single owner, 204,000 miles! $3,000: [sold]

1997 Honda Civic HX

I might look at that one first just because it is closest, but discounting the automatic and the one with hopefully minor damage, it also has the lowest asking price, but all things being equal, I would rather pay $500 more for 50,000 miles less.

Should I look at all of them and see if anyone else makes an offer while I am driving around?

Silver was pretty popular, or maybe it is just Arizona.

Single owner is good possibly better than 50 k less and 5 owners.
