Google cars drove 1.45 million miles before their first accident. Uber had far worse statistics. I am unsure about Tesla.

Huang died on Xistday. Perhaps he should have joined us at "James and the Giant Peach."

If someone has life insurance, do you think the insurer would investigate wrongful death charges?

Another Tesla owner "tests" the accident site

Uber pedestrian death wasn't a "jump out" or a "step off". They were crossing a 4-lane road from left to right (driver's view). And they almost made it.

Also, I don't think we can say whether the headlights were any good or not based on a video. I suspect the headlights on a brand new Volvo are waaaay better than my 20 year old Metro, that's for sure.

That said, the Uber (not Waymo) doesn't technically need headlights (in terms of "seeing" things). They're only there for the benefit of the car's safety minder (who was apparently playing with her phone or something, up to the split second before impact).

Got a link? Where did you get this info? I read that the car was in the left lane. And she had been walking lengthwise down the median. Which means she "almost made it" two steps right out in front of the car.

The Uber car was driving in the rightmost lane. (And the section of road where it happened is much wider than 2 standard lanes.)

There was a median, however the pedestrian was nowhere near it. She had almost cleared the right lane. The impact damage is on the right side of the car.

Wow! That "professional" driver is in deep trouble. Playing with their phone. Wonder why the Lidar couldn't see the pedestrian even with the added presence of the bike.

It seems as though the bicycle and dangling shopping bags from the handlebars may have been her undoing. The car's AI didn't understand what that conglomeration of shapes represented and ignored it.

Computers don't get drunk, don't cheat a taxi bill, don't talk on phone while driving, don't let anger made a "heavy foot" on accelerator....

But computer can't judge faces, can't spot idiots on sidewalk looking like dumb mesmerazied by iphone while near the street. A human with attendion can spot a idiot up to make some stupidity. Not just by face but also by behavior hesitation in steps, ansiety or hurry signals.
For the computer it's just 3D objects recognized by edge detection algorithms.

Can you imagine if in future, with most things drive and commanded by computer, and a super brilliant rackers could creat a super virus to turn the machines to make disasters. It would be like the Star Wars episode 3 massacre of Jedis.
