I sat in the Fit and it didn't fit. The seat doesn't go back far enough. I haven't tried out the Yaris but the base price is 12,995.

I usually drive cars into the ground, and trade them in with parts falling off. When I traded my Metro in, a beer can and 2 hose clamps held the exhaust system on.

I have not heard how good this 1.6 engine is. The 1.8 has a timing chain rather than belt, which is a good thing.

Oh great. Now I have to do the "increased fuel usage over 90,000 miles vs. cost of timing belt replacement" calculation first. :-)

Really? Did you sit in a 2009, or an earlier model?

You must be one tall person -- I'm 6'-4" and my brother is over 6'-6", and we fit in the earlier Fit! My brother has had a string of Toyota Tacoma's (and one 4Runner), which he (obviously) fits in very well. The 2009 Fit is supposed to be even bigger inside...

It was a few years ago. Squeezed in, slid the seat back, and it stopped right before it would have been comfortable. I am 6', 250lbs.

I sold the Toyota pickup today about two hours after I put it on craigslist. I have to make a decision pretty soon.

What are the options? xA, Fit, Versa, Yaris. Any others? My ideal car is a Metro, unfortunately no longer available.

I have been looking at used cars. Not really seeing many high mpg vehicles out there. Lots of guzzlers though.

I'm 6'-4" at 245 pounds, and my brother is 6'-6"+ and ~265 pounds -- you might want to try the new (2009) Fit which is ~2.5" longer on the inside?

The xA is no longer sold -- they replaced it with the xD, which is heavier, Cd is worse (0.32 vs 0.31) and the engine is larger (1.8L vs 1.5L). The list right at this moment includes:

Fit
xD
Yaris (2 or 4 door hatchbacks or sedan)
Versa (4 door hatchback or sedan)
Aveo 5

In a few weeks (or months):

new Insight
Scion iQ

In my mind, this is where a graph of speed vs. mpg over a range of speeds in standard conditions would be a more useful fuel economy yardstick than just EPA ratings.

I'd be looking @ whichever car won that contest of the ones you're considering.
